Spam offers to let people use their PC to attack Obama site

Spammers are hoping to rouse Obama critics to launch a cyber protest and to download malware onto their PCs in the process.

New spam is circulating that supposedly offers a way for people to use their computers to launch a denial-of-service attack on the Web site of President Obama, researchers said on Tuesday.

The e-mail message says: "If You dont like Obama come here, you can help to ddos his site with your installs."

The e-mail then provides a link to a Web site where visitors are offered money for installing the supposed denial-of-service (DoS) software, according to a blog posting on the site of e-mail security provider Proofpoint.

The spam site also tells visitors to come back and get updated versions of the purported denial of service software if their antivirus program is detecting it as malware and disabling it.

It's not clear whether the software does turn the computer into a DoS attacking zombie, or what it does, if anything. But it would be crazy to expose your computer like that, regardless of your political leanings.

I don't think it's crazy; I think it's funny, that anyone would be so simple-minded as to actually allow their computer to be used in a DDOS attack.

I think anyone that actually signed up for this, deserves to have their computer turned into a zombie, have the attack tracked back to their IP and then arrested for participating in a DDOS attack.

It is the same people who believed the death panel and birth certificate lies, so yes they are stupid enough to fall for this.

I have to agree that people who think that launching a DoS attack is an appropriate way to discuss and debate their positions, deserve a bit of malware.

At the moment, hill-billy mobs all across the US are raging against a healthcare plan of which their demographic group is ironically a major potential beneficiary. In the rest of the industrialised world, people are generally grateful for having universal health coverage in case medical treatment becomes unaffordable due to job loss or prolonged and severe illness. It's no surprise that reprobates view as easy prey the hicks who are dim enough to vote against their own interests. Meanwhile, the rest of the world watches in amusement and disbelief.

Well said.

Speaking from my own "hill-billy" point-of-view, socialism has never been an effective government system. I agree that our healthcare system needs a little government oversight, but a "universal" healthcare plan is not democratic, its is socialistic. Although I am a "hick," I have been employed by the Government for a few years now and I know how frustrating government programs can be first hand. America did not get where it is today based on socialistic values, it got where it is today on the backs of hard-working Americans who look to themselves for a solution, not the government.

" a "universal" healthcare plan is not democratic, its is socialistic."

Socialism happens when the needs of the "demos", the people, are are not being met or they are taken to the cleaners by the for profit health insurance companies.

Obama ran on a platform that included health care reform, the democracy has spoken and the majority want socialized health care.

@asadsasdf & Perry_Clease

You two are just showing your complete ignorance. No one is proposing socialized medicine. Learn the definition of socialism and study the proposals. You'll see there's no match there.

In fact, here's a simple little set of graphics that might help you:

Joe: You're right... Protesting and "Community organizing" is only a good thing when it's done by the left. If the right tries to fight back an ever growing government they must be racists or hillbilly's.

asdfasdf123450298327499,

Then I hope you never use unemployment benefits, drive on public roads, call the police or fire department...

You have it wrong we got where we are today by allowing corporations to walk all over the backs of hard-working Americans.

If you haven't noticed the US is lagging in education, health care, technology...
by Eddie-c August 19, 2009 10:03 AM PDT
Cody - are you on drugs? The right "fighting back against ..." ?? I guess you conveniently forgot the previous incumbents ILLEGAL wire-tapping that went against FISA? How about his illegal war - and all the FUD about WMD's - that put America in hock to the Chinese to pay for it? And the Patriot Act, i.e. further intrusion of the Govt into peoples' lives? Must be soooo convenient being able to ignore those things and them claim "foul" when people want something fair!

Pharmaceutical & insurance companies have been reaming the country for years. Obama campaigned on doing something about it, and people have had enough of being reamed.

There is a difference between protesting and going into town hall meetings and screaming lies.

There is a difference between demonstrating where the President is speaking and demonstrating while carrying weapons.

Imagine if anti-war protesters should up to a Bush town hall armed, you Reich wing retards would go nuts.
by Dalkorian August 19, 2009 11:11 AM PDT
Personally, I'm thrilled the retardicans are going nuts like 6 month old infants. It means we're making a difference and actually fixing the messes they caused with their incompetence and greed.
by setjeff15081947 August 19, 2009 2:31 PM PDT
"industrialised" ... Hmm, EU spelling? Must be a "Furr-Iner!"
"hill-billy mobs" ... We only have "Marauding-Mumba-Mobs" here in The Colonies.
And, the "Rest-of-the-World" can smirk all they wish in snooty, "amusement and disbelief".

Now, I believe it is not proper to make personal attacks; I hope I have not, because "joe-bloggs-who", and his postings, has done enough in that area. Let's try [I too] to keep it "On-Topic".

@asdfasdf123450298327499

Most wealthy countries offer some sort of essential care for their citizens. In this regard the US ranks far down the list. I don't view universal health care as any more socialistic than say Social Security or welfare. Programs like these are necessary in our society. I do find it odd that people are so vocally against healthcare reform while they seem not to mind federal subsidies that amount to corporate welfare. Case in point would be the subsidies offered to the oil companies while they are reaping record profits.

If you would like an overview of what systems are in use around the globe I suggest you read this:

People that allow their computers to be used in attacks against government websites should be arrested.

I'm pretty certain that even replying to this spam in the hope that it was real would constitute a crime. Isn't it "Conspiracy", or whatever the legal term is these days. And because it's interstate that would make it a federal wire crime. I'd like to see the FBI bring charges against everybody who knowingly downloads this bot. Not because it's attacking the Obama administration, but because it's a crime to knowingly take part in activities such as this.

To the user who wrote the following, "Speaking from my own "hill-billy" point-of-view, socialism has never been an effective government system."

Actually, you're 100% wrong about this. Socialism has proved to be one of the most effective forms of government in the world and it is actually the democratically chosen form of government for many developed nations. Including many of the most successful Western nations . For example, Japan, Britain and Israel all have had socialist system since the end of WWII. France is so socialist that it's almost Communist in many respects, and much of the rest of Europe is either socialist or partially socialist. Even conservative capitalist countries like Germany have semi socialist systems that makes Obama look like a Republican, and the people there are fighting for it to be more socialist.

Just taking a few examples Japan, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, all have socialist health care and all are listed far above the US in terms of life expectancy, childhood health, and health in old age. They also outstrip the US by a mile when it comes to the general happiness of their citizens. Nobody has to worry about bankruptcy if they get getting old or sick, or both. And when was the last time you saw a the British working poor, with their socialist system, having to go to a can bank to feed their children? Millions of Americans are dependant on can banks and charities, millions can't afford private health care, and millions more don't have sufficient health care. For these people socialism would provide them with a better quality of life.

The fact of the matter in not socio-democrat here it s that people are not educate and do this because they don t know what there are exposing there PC that can impact they lives in money loss, private content lost or prison because you help indirect a person to attack a social network or the white house official site.
As for the discussion about socio or democrat I like to think that for any moment the is a way to resolve history learns us that.
In some period because on one type of government the people from being happy got to the point of revolution of war for resources or even food in some case in Africa .
So they changed the way to democrat or sociolist dependent on the case but in my opinion you can run a country if you don t learn to combine all the type not only the 2 big ones because in essence not of them are created with bad intentions only for specific need of the people at that moment in the idea of a few that have the role of the voice of the masses . Marx is one of them

We don't need healthcare reform, we need to reform healthcare cost. We have the best healthcare in the world, but it cost a pretty penny to get treatment

No we don't have the best healthcare in the world, we are 37.
http://www.photius.com/rankings/healthranks.html

I do believe we spend more then anyone else though. And if your spending the most to be 37'th, then that is the wrong #1 to be.
by JonRey43 August 19, 2009 9:50 AM PDT
Thanks catch for catching that.
Yes, I to believe we spend more money on health. We just need to regulate the cost of getting the treatment, not have a radical overhaul on the system.
by TV James August 19, 2009 8:29 AM PDT
Hilarious.

Of course, the kind of people who would fall for this aren't running Antivirus anywhere.

They should have explained in a little more detail what a DDOS is so that the people that would think this was a good idea would feel smarter and more informed before making such a dumb choice.

(As in, a little marketing can go a long way, even with a bad idea.)

Were not Obama's people recently sending out unsolicited email (a.k.a. spam) concerning healthcare? Or maybe that only went to those fishy email sources reported by the neighborhood snitches?

Aside from that, anybody who voluntarily installs this malware to participate in a DDOS attack is a complete jerk. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of complete jerks.

I will almost guarantee you that the righties will be blaming this on the lefties. And if the tables were turned, it would be finger pointing in the other direction. It IS a pretty good slimy idea though, in a very underhanded way.

Healthcare needs major reform. From what i hear first hand, the majority of the anti-reformist, or anti Obamacare-ists, already have a company/government/somebody-else-is-paying version of health care coverage and their major complaints are the costs of the co-pays. The word socialism is thrown around by many who typically use Sweden, Great Britain, Germany, wherever, as an example of great benefits to their people, failing to see how "socialist" those countries are. IIRC I read that the tax rate in Sweden is in the neighborhood of 80%. For that they get cradle to grave healthcare, highways, schools, and all the other things we want, but don't want to pay for.

Seriously, people would actually click these links, download and then install a programme that will "zombify" your computer?
Wow...

Plus, DDoS attacking Obama's site is a bit of a stupid idea ... It'd only temporarily shut down the site ... and then all the owner's would have to do was uplaod back-ups ... so ...

Bam :D

If we have serious disagreements with Mr. Obama and his administrations agendas and style of
government, failure to protect the weakest among us, etc., any type of malicious interference is
just dead wrong. If we are fighting issues, the fight has to be very clean and very respectful, filled
with the documentation of truth and with strong and firm hearts that adhere to good will. We are
not fighting against the people, we are addressing agenda's that fail to respect the dignity of the
persons. We cannot, will not and must not address these issues by fundamentally disrespecting the people who are in power. We also cannot cave into agendas that are intrisicaly, ethically wrong.
We cannot engage ourselves in changing bad ethics into good through means which are in themselves, unethical.
