I am no stranger to pedometers. Last year I used a very high-tech one with an OLED display and over-the-air data syncing. Newly available iPad app Huge Pedometer is brimming with even more hardware potential, though it's wrapped around what is certainly the most ridiculous premise: using a tablet as a tool to track your steps.
Like any other pedometer app on the App Store, the 99-cent Huge Pedometer uses the accelerometer to determine how many steps you've taken. This is something that typically requires you to situate the pedometer hardware on your person--be it on your belt, in your pocket, or attached to one of your shoes.
In terms of this working with the iPad your options are obviously more limited. I was able to get it to work (sort of) by lashing an iPad around my leg with a belt. A simpler (though still wildly impractical) option is just to throw it in your bag, and leave the app running while you walk around, which works at the expense of your battery life.
The app offers no analysis of your physical efforts, or a way to log past journeys. In fact, there are no options to the app at all. A better solution, it would seem, is to buy a real pedometer and log your efforts on the iPad's notes app. Or if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, just use one of the countless (and pocket-size) pedometer apps that will actually fit into your pocket.
