Adobe brings Photoshop.com to the iPhone

Adobe Systems on Friday introduced a new Photoshop app for iPhone users that lets them edit photos from both their phone and their online library on Photoshop.com.

The app is free of charge and offers tools such as cropping, image rotation, color controls, and simple one-touch filter effects that can change the look and feel of shots all at once. It also features undo and redo controls so that if users make a mistake, or want to revert back to the original, it takes just a few taps.

As soon as users are done editing any photo, they can either save it back to their phone or upload it to their Photoshop.com account. The app also doubles as a photo-taking tool since you can simply take a photo, then have it upload right away.

What makes the app notable (besides from being from Adobe) is that the entire editing control set works off gestures. Instead of using dials or sliders, users just need to swipe their finger across the screen to change things such as brightness or color values. The same goes for its filters, which can be whisked from one end of the screen to the other instead of taking up more screen real estate or using a drop-down menu. It's one of the more intuitive control methods I've seen on a mobile photo-editing app, and can be quite precise once you get the hang of it.

The app is available now and is free of charge, although Adobe's free Photoshop.com service has a 2GB limit, which can be expanded with an annual paid storage plan.

Photoshop for iPhone lets you do all sorts of things to your photos, including beaming them back to Photoshop.com when you're done.

I think it is gimmicy and useless unless you want something to waste time and money on

I can see a lot of good uses for this applications, aside from the "hey mom look at me" photos.

For businesses that have installers or other services employees, being able to share a bunch of onsite images with the office staff is a big plus. You could always email them, although having the ability to send them to a server can work better for most business processes. Adobe could improve the app, by simply adding the a method of drawing on the photo. Other Apps have this already, and the feature is quite useful.

The filters are a bit gimmicky, with the quality of photos taken on the iphone. But, hey it can't be all work all the time.

I just downloaded it and think it's useful in the way that it's fun to quickly spruce up our photos. Now that we finally have MMS we can send cooler looking photos to our friends through text if we wish.

I just made a quick video of my first use of it doing some cropping and changing tint, color, etc...

You can see it here if you like: http://moviestarentrepreneur.com/adobe-photoshop-mobile/

"I think it is gimmicy and useless unless you want something to waste time and money on"

There is no money to waste, it is free. I used it on my iPod and found it to be very useful.

""I think it is gimmicy and useless unless you want something to waste time and money on"

He's just jealous since he can't have it so good on his BlackBerry or WinMo or whatever wannabe iPhones out there.

Fun stuff, I think they did this right. Keeping it simple yet still useful across much of the board was a good decision

It's probably still inside of me somewhere. That was taken @ Fire on the Mountain in Portland, OR. They also do fried Twinkies, although IMHO the fried Oreo is vastly superior.

I first tried one last week. I was expecting crunchy in the middle, but that's not the case. The whole thing just melts in your mouth. If only it was wrapped in bacon I would have reached artery-blocking nirvana.

The iPhone is a niche product. It will never take off. All this bragging about how many apps there are is useless when they are all just mindless fart apps like this one. Oh and the JD Power study is obviously manufactured by an iCrapple fanboy that has no taste.

Can't wait to get back to my WinMo phone that can multitask like there's no tomorrow. Right before it crashes.

Bipolar much. or Dissociate identity disorder? It is hard to tell which direction you are going, especially when you bash the iphone, and then ultimately bash Winmo with a comment like, "Right before it crashes".

I think it should be pointed out that the app is currently only available in the US stores. I am from the UK and an avid PS.com user. So I am quite disappointed that the app isn't downloadable through the UK store at this moment. Hopefully it will be downloadable soon.

Has anyone actually "READ the TOS" Who owns the perpetual RIGHTS to MONETIZE those pictures of your precious kids and lazy kittens you post on the site?

I wonder if its the same TOS that they HAD to CHANGE the last time they introduced such a Service?

Interesting, The new TOS seems to show that ADOBE did learn from what happened a year or so ago.
they do make here, one of the most -clear- ownership and control statements ive seen online for such a service oriented site. Good for them, though I suggest still all potential users READ the TOS on all sites like these before you find out your working for their bottom line, for free.:)

I think this app is a great addition to iphone, it will allow user to really experience the whole "touch screen", however, it will not like the full photoshop software, since it's not for professional usage... something to play around with your pictures w/o having to send to computer and then photoshop.. pretty Convenient

Honestly this is a pretty good app, it's nice to see Adobe doing something for their users, many of whom I'm sure have iPhones. It's frustrating now Adobe seems to have really stopped trying to be a creative company lately. If they don't get bought up I could see companies like Pixelmator eventually giving them a very good run for their money.

I've now used it for a day with a lot of quick photos taken on the iPhone. I like it overall, and think it can replace the Apple-supplied camera app in the menu system for me. It's just an overlay for the existing Camera App, but it's a good one.

Here's some interesting tidbits after using it:

1) Take your photos from insdie the Photoshop.com application. It will let you take your photo with the camera controls you are used to.

2) You get two pictures as a result- the original one you took wtih the camera will show up in your Camera Roll in the Photos area, then when you have edited the results and chosen to save it, there will be a second edited version in the same area. You have both versions that way.

Improvements I'd like to see:

Allow new file names for photos saved. It's hard to send multiple pictures when they are all labeled photo.jpg.

When you put your finger on the screen to wipe side to side to make an adjustment, have the slider control for that come up or have a popup in a corner that tells you by percentage points what amount of change you are making.

New name. Photoshop.com is a bad name for the application. There's already apps in the App store now called Photoshop and that leads to confusion for buyers. Hopefully Apple will address this, or Adobe will do something different.

seems like a lot of other iPhone photo editors, but the Adobe and Photoshop names do carry a lot of weight

WOW! Another fantastic tool for the I-Phone and it does only what's needed on a phone. PLEASE, if you need to do more then do it on your Mac Book Pro god! it's a phone and it's not for graphic art. It's free, great work Adobe.
