1-800-FREE-411 and Dial DIR-ECT-IONS connect

Mobile users away from their computers have had a handful of options for directory services in the past couple of years. There's TellMe (555-TELL), FREE-411, CALL-411, and GOOG-411 to name some of the free ones. There are also the official ones from each of the carriers that are billed a la carte--and usually at a high price.

This morning FREE-411 (one of the older services of the crowd) has announced a partnership with a useful driving directions service Dial DIR-ECT-IONS to help people find phone numbers and addresses for businesses or residential listings along with step-by-step directions for how to get there. The service starts next month in three major cities (Los Angeles, the SF Bay Area, and Chicago) and then nationwide in April.

This is immensely helpful if your handset isn't on a data plan, or you're away from a phonebook or map. Competitor TellMe, which is owned by Microsoft, has had such a mixed feature using its downloadable phone app, but no such service for its text, or 800-based phone services.

Just wanted to point out that there are numerous choices for free directory assistance by phone, including the ones you mentioned and the "official ones from each of the carriers" and some others. I want to be sure to note that as far as I'm aware, "411" is chargeable from all carriers, but the FREE directory assistance services from the carriers are just as "free" as the others. They are accessible via toll-free numbers. The best thing for all of us is that with this much choice, and with services from so many big names, you can be sure that we'll be hearing about more valuable features on each service as time goes on. There are definitely differences between each of the services below. Try them all and see which one(s) you prefer. You may end up with more than one in your phone address book, so you can use what works best under various conditions. ALSO....you may want to try them again every so often to see what's new. You never know when you may choose a new favorite or find something cool. (By the way, i have two in my phone address book, my favorite is 1-800-YellowPages, and I do still pay for regular 411 calls sometimes, too. Grin!)

1-800-YellowPages (800-935-5697)
1-800-555-Tell (800-555-8355)
1-800-Call-411 (800-225-5411)
1-800-Call-Dex (800-225-5339) ("beta" system)
1-800-Free-411 (800-373-3411)
1-800-Goog-411 (800-466-4411)
1-800-Info-Fast (800-463-6327)
1-800-San-Diego (800-726-3434) (for those in the San Diego area)
1-800-The-Info (800-843-4636)
SayHello Service (904-358-3333) (It's not a toll-free number, so check with your local phone company in the 904 area code in FL to see if it's free for you.)

Happy calling!

I found another great free Directory Assistance service, 1-800-411-SAVE. You can call it from any phone and get free directory assistance (Business, Government, or Residential). The best part???you actually get to speak with a real person immediatly, instead of some silly machine. The other great thing I like about the service is that they also connect the call for free so I don?t have to write the number down.

Automated directory assistance have improved over the years but I'm affraid its just not enough. It has to understand us first before we can even consider it useful. Good thing 1-800-411-SAVE uses live operators to serve its customers. There's nothing like the HUMAN TOUCH, not to mention that its for FREE!!!

I totally agree! Personally, I like to use 1-800-411-SAVE as I hate those free DA services that trap you in an automated system. They?re ok with the easy stuff but with 411SAVE, there are real people answering the phone. I guarantee you?ll prefer talking to people!

411 save does NOT connect your calls. at least it doesn't connect mine. it WAS nice, but after that, it's about the same as any other free 411 service. they use some pretty crappy headsets too cause they can't hear ****. out of all the times i used it, maybe once have i had a call connected without having to repeat myself like 2 times. other than that it's alright, but like i said, it doesn't connect calls.

stop spamming, you kids are gay

This is so true stop spamming! I will let you know off the bat this isnt spam but I do work for a free 411 service, we have two numbers now, 1-800-INFOFAST, and 1-800-DIAL-411, Both of which you are connected instantly to a live operator, we have high quality headsets most of which our personal ones, mine alone is a 300 dollar headset so I can provide you with quality service quickly. and we do connect sadly we do NOT connect to residential numbers but that is for the own persons privacy, we have numbers for anywhere you can imagine, try us out if you get the chance. we also will search by heading, type of business, or even partial names of businesses well help you out in every way we can! :-)

I'd like to find a nation-wide directory assistance number that is NOT 1-800, etc. Any cell phone users out there that would like to add a number for FREE calling, but can't use 1-800 numbers know why :)
