With Chrome, Google reignites the OS wars

by CNET News staff

Google Chrome OS, due in the second half of 2010, underscores the Web giant's cloud-computing ambitions and opens new competition with Microsoft.

What Chrome OS has on Windows that Linux doesn't

Because the Web is already a powerful force, Google's OS project has a leg up over would-be Microsoft challengers such as Linux. But has its own issues.

Why Chrome OS? Google says, why not?

Google says it is building Chrome OS because it wants to improve the experience of using a computer. Of course, getting more people to spend their lives online and searching can't hurt.

Analyzing Google's Chrome OS strategy

The forthcoming Chrome OS will be technically straightforward, but why Google is doing an OS in the first place is a little less obvious.

its is dumb... Mac all the way.

It's funny how CNET promotes this FUD. This is no OS - this is just a simple poke at Microsoft to try and down play the success that Microsoft is sure to have with Windows 7. Where's the OS? Where's the applications? Where's the special statement by Google saying that if I use their OS they won't sell my life to marketers at large?

Google = you have no privacy any more - we own you and your information and guess what? It's up for bid baby!

At SplendidCRM, we are die-hard Microsoft supporters, but we would be interested in a Google OS so long as Miguel de Icaza and his Mono team can enable us to run our .NET application on the new OS. As application developers, we are less enthusiastic about learning a new OS or a new API, but we would be very open to running our application on a new, fast, simple and secure platform.

Your poll is missing an entry:

I really don't care that another derivative of Linux will be released, no matter who is behind it.

What kind of poll is this?

an extremely biased one
by Phoenix_Knight005 July 9, 2009 7:25 AM PDT
The poll options essentially boil down to:

1. Microsoft sucks and Google is Awesome!
2. Google is Awesome!
3. Google is Awesome!
4. Google is okay, but Apple is Awesome!
5. Linux is Awesome, and by extent, so is Google!

Seriously, this is ******* pathetic! Even Google themselves wouldn't conduct such a blatantly biased poll.

And what the hell is up with all the Chrome OS articles? My news feed is getting clogged with Chrome news stories from cnet. Every other tech site has one article talking about Chrome OS, but cnet has at least a round dozen, most of them talking about how great Chrome is going to be, even though they don't even know any real details of substance and no one anywhere has ever actually had a chance to use it. This is ridiculous!
by JavaMan09 July 9, 2009 11:06 AM PDT
Really. This is so blatantly biased that it's funny. I wonder if Google has some secret partnership with some companies.
Another place I noticed some bias was PCWorld. They seemed GAGA over Android.
by JavaMan09 July 9, 2009 11:10 AM PDT
Oh, and another thing. Who said there isn't a OS war already going on? Like I guess CNET considers Dell selling Ubuntu PCs, some netbooks being loaded with Linux flavors, and Apple's continuous growth with their computers nothing. The battle going on now may not be full blown, but I think it's there.
by alex-cnet July 9, 2009 3:51 PM PDT
Honestly, who made this poll? It's alright to have biased articles (of which CNet is filled) because they express opinion, but when you ask the opinion of your readers, stuff like this just infuriates them and brings the entire site's reporting into question. New low, CNet.

In other words, forget it.
It is *Chrome* OS after all...

I would love to try it, and would probably dual boot it so when I just want to check gmail, it wont take 3 years to boot up.

I wonder where is the Windows will still be my choice option on the poll.

by Phoenix_Knight005 July 9, 2009 11:51 AM PDT
Windows option? Nonsense! Once Chrome OS is released, no one will ever use windows again. People will either continue using OS X or switch from Windows to Chrome OS. Linux users will switch because Chrome is linux-based and will be superior in every way. End of discussion. *sticks fingers in ears*
by uptheironsrafi July 12, 2009 1:16 AM PDT
This really is unbelievable. Why is CNET so biased? Do google or apple fund them or something? Even a kindergartner could have figured out that there should have been an option in supporting Windows in that poll.

I hope Google wins. Computers OS need a change in a major way. I can't imagine why anyone would like Microsoft outside of the business enviroment.

I believe the point of Google Chrome is to offer an operating system for those who have basic computing needs (office processing, web browsing, email, social networks, instant messaging). There is a minority of users who simply want a netbook, laptop or desktop that they can just simply install at a low price and not worry about having to install different programs to secure the computer. Mac's somewhat solve this issue, but it comes at a premium.

I suppose since Google is such a big donor to the democrat party they'll now be immune to the same anti-trust lawsuits that the Clinton D.O.J. hammered Microsoft with. Politics as usual...and yes CNET is a biased propoganda rag against any company (i.e. Microsoft) that displays the qualities of American greatness and exceptionalism.

Google's gonna win. Every computer will be cloud-based, meaning that you can borrow somebody's computer and access everything. Your files and all other types of data will take up space slowly on your Gmail storage. When you're not on the net, you will be able to use GMail offline, Docs offline, and more!

I'm sticking to Windows. It's just something I've been living with my whole life and am used to.

Never had a personal experience with Mac OS, but it's good in its own ways and so is Linux. The same thing will probably be true for this Chrome OS. It'll have its pros and cons, just like everything else in this world. Some will like it, some won't.

If Google wants to make an OS, then so be it, let them, what's the harm? Whoever likes it will use it, whoever doesn't, won't. It's that simple ^^
