GoDaddy.com outage takes sites offline

A distributed denial-of-service attack turned dark at least several thousand Web sites hosted by GoDaddy.com Wednesday morning. The outage was intermittent over several hours, according to Nick Fuller, GoDaddy.com communications manager.

Neither e-mail nor DNS services were interrupted, Fuller said.

While one GoDaddy.com tech support person told me during the DDoS attack that at least several thousand Web sites were unreachable, Fuller said only a very small percentage of sites were unreachable but would not provide exact numbers "because of security reasons."

To add to the consternation of Web site owners, GoDaddy.com's voice mail system pointed to its support page for more information about the outage and when it would be corrected. No such information was posted there.

GoDaddy.com was hit in November 2005 with a similar denial-of-service attack that affected 600,000 of its customers' hosted Web sites for roughly an hour.

Not the end of the world, although I'm sure many of the hosted site owners don't think that. I guess this will effect GoDaddy's business for the next little bit, though.

I moved off GoDaddy because we had nothing but problems. Flaky user interface and customer service. It's good for mom and pops, but for my company i couldn't afford problems without clear explanations.

Lucky, I have several sites hosted there but all personal and/or local sites. No big deal but man, if I owned a business with a site there, I would have one sad dude. Their phones were ties up and there was no info on the Support site as mentioned.

Yeah... I just use them for name hosting. To be honest, my website doesn't get enough traffic to need a host - it's a personal rant/coding/furry site. I think the only thing that's gotten over 10k views would be the patch I wrote for Adobe's Reader/Acrobat 8.1.2 security update that made it unremoveable if you deployed it via GPO.

I used to register domains and host at GoDaddy - until i sent payment through and they didnt activate my account for a while. I called support and got very a crappy response, poor knowledgeability about the problem and plain rudeness. Moved away from them and ive never regretted.

Why should i contribute to some dolt's salary just so that he can give me a "better than thou" attitude?
