No escaping Britney Spears: 2008's top searches

Maybe all our refined, enlightened interests are lost in the long tail, because Britney Spears once again was the most popular search subject in 2008 on Yahoo.

For Yahoo, Spears wasn't the only pop-culture icon in Yahoo's top 10 searches. Also on the list were Miley Cyrus at No. 4, Jessica Alba at No. 6, Lindsay Lohan at No. 7, and Angelina Jolie at No. 9.

Apparently a lot of people are curious about World Wrestling Entertainment, because WWE was No. 2. The online game RuneScape was No. 5, anime series Naruto was No. 7, and American Idol finished in 10th place on Yahoo's list.

Yahoo also broke down searches for various other subjects. For economic searches, the top 10 list started with IRS stimulus checks, then followed with oil prices, gold prices, gas prices, Dow Jones, Sallie Mae, stock market, AIG, foreclosures, and debt consolidation. The list reveals that people use general-purpose searches for everything ranging from how-to advice to the latest news.

In the people of politics, President-elect Barack Obama led the list. Next came Sarah Palin, John McCain, Hillary Clinton, George Bush, Ron Paul, John Edwards, Mike Huckabee, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Mitt Romney.

AOL also shared its top search terms for 2008, though it didn't break out overall terms.

Ask.com also spotlighted popular 2008 searches, and has a few variations on the standard search categories. Its top questions are as follows:

1. How do I get pregnant?
2. How do I lose weight?
3. How do I write a resume?
4. How much is minimum wage?
5. How much is my car worth?
6. How do I change my name?
7. What is the meaning of life?
8. How do I register to vote?
9. Why is the sky blue?
10. How do I download videos?

And since Ask.com bought Dictionary.com earlier this year, it's releasing top search terms for that site. People's vocabulary expansion efforts concentrated on these terms: maverick, socialism, economy, recession, radical, cyclone, solace, realtor, environment, and potholes.

Apparently Google, which has shared search trends on its annual Zeitgeist list since 2001, didn't get the memo to release its results Monday, but expect it to cough up some new results soon--and, I hope, some of the accompanying graphs.

Sad commentary on America right there. We worship half-wit celebrities while Rome burns.

check out every other country. They are in the same boat we are. They gave loans to people who no cash and now we have to bail them out. At least our economy went up 2% this year. Its better than France that went up .000001%.

We should use our searches more wisely. Searches for celebrities are wastes alot of time ,and don't get much accomplished except unfeasible rumors .

Am I the only one confused by "How do I get pregnant" ? I wouldn't think that would be a top search... you kind of should have learned that one if your old enough that its a concern...

I was thinking the same thing. Last I checked it was a pretty simple formula with some luck thrown in but hey apparently not.

This is probably the most depressing thing I have read in a while. Who really cares about Britney Spears anymore in fact why did they ever care. Then our education system is so bad that people, im hoping girls, dont know how to get pregnant. Then some people are so lost that they ask a search engine what the meaning of life is, which im hoping directly links them to Monty Python's website. Finally some people dont know what the definitions of a realtor, the environment, or pothole are. Im waiting to see the google results.

You guys are acting like searching is costing people's lives or something. Let people search their interests. I think many of you probably share common interests in hot women and/or TV shows.

I have been following Britney Spears since I was a teenager, and I know that comebacks are possible; payday loans helped me make a financial comeback! I know that Britney Spears will never need financial help. She makes money while she sleeps. However, I know Britney has needed a great deal of professional help to make her comeback a reality. Now 27 years old, Britney has been a figure in the pop music scene for ten years. I still remember her first music video for ?Baby One More Time? where she was dressed as a schoolgirl with pigtails and knee-high socks. It?s no wonder all the guys loved her. From there her career took off until she hit rock bottom a few years ago. She had a messy divorce and custody battle with Kevin Federline, and she faced a bunch of charges for driving offenses. I love Britney, but when she shaved her head, I definitely turned a blind eye. I couldn?t watch my favorite pop princess do that to herself. This year, she is the comeback kid. She has a new album out, she?s been hitting the charts, and in March 2009, she is going on her first world tour in years. She isn?t the first celebrity to stage a comeback, but it is always possible.
