Firefox extension makes Flash games full-screen

by Josh Lowensohn

A new Firefox extension aptly named "Flash Game Maximizer" is a must-have for any Flash game enthusiast. It does one thing, and does it well: letting you toggle between standard- and full-screen modes on any game--regardless of whether it has been coded with such an option.

Considering that Flash games are hosted all over the place, and rarely with a ubiquitous user interface, you're likely to run into a good number of them that must be played in whatever space they've been given on a Web page. With Flash Game Maximizer, however, you don't have to worry about this at all.

Once the extension has been installed, you'll get a new button on the bottom-right corner of your browser that turns yellow when it detects Flash. Clicking it resizes the game to fit your browser window. A slight caveat here is that it completely restarts whatever Flash module is on the page, which on most games means losing any progress.

Because Flash Game Maximizer is an "experimental" extension, you will need to log in to Mozilla's add-on site to download it.

If you're a Flash game enthusiast, I wholeheartedly recommend giving this a go. It works on my personal favorite, Totem Destroyer, as well as on Desktop Tower Defense.

Flash Game Maximizer turns almost any Flash game window into a full-screen affair, regardless of whether the developer made it an option. (click to enlarge)

This one seems that all it does is taking the link of the swf and opening it in a new tab. It doesn't work when the swf file location is not in the page's source (try it at Kongregate).

I like it, thanks!

I actually saw the thread that the developer requested it on...
Noone made it, so he/she did.

Josh:

Thanks for the kind review of my (quickly put together) "Flash Game Maximizer" extension. I just hope it will live up to your readers expectations. To that effect, I have recently released a new version (1.2.0) which should work a little better as well as offer a few more features and options.

I plan to nominate the extension for public access very soon (just a few quirks and minor bugs in 1.2.0 that I want to eliminate), until then I'm afraid it is still necessary to create an account with AMO in order to install the extension.

Antony_256:

I don't know which version and/or platform you are using, but with my latest version (on Windows Vista with Firefox v.3.0.4) most games on Kongregate seem to work as intended (though some games, regardless of the site, won't work. Also, some sites embed Flash in a manner my parser can't make sense of (it will likely be better in future versions, but will probably never be able to understand all sites, as some use obfuscation and scripted Flash injections etc.)

John7385:

The button is has changed graphics (and color) since the early versions, aside from the fact that the button will be grayed out on pages with no Flash content. So if you have a recent version of Flash Game Maximizer, you should look for a gray button with a "G" on it, which should turn blue on pages with Flash content (red after you click it and maximize the Flash).

WeepingSalix:

There should be a decent chance that FGM will maximize Flash-based video content (although I thought most such Flash video players came with their own maximize features nowadays?)

narky9:

It works for me (at least with the latest version of FGM).

Happy holidays everybody,

A-)
