Gmail goes emoticon-crazy

New emoticons in Gmail include crabs, cake, and a big pile of you-know-what. Yes. Really.

We recently heard (and noticed) that Google just dumped a shipment of emoticons into Gmail. Where there were only a handful of circular and square emoticons before, there are now about 150 smileys of various colors and expressions.

Of course, Google has borrowed from the great animated emoticon pioneers that have come before, particularly Yahoo and Windows Live Messenger, but there are a few unique offerings and organizational styling thrown in.

You'll find a fireball face, a snowman, an upside down smiley, a crab, and, tastefully, a pile of excrement. There's are some differences in animation and offerings when you tab between the round and square modes. In the square version, for instance, the crab is holding its claws aloft while scooting from side to side and the plop is abuzz with animated flies. Emoticons have also appeared to have shrunk.

The emoticon push is partially good news for Google Talk users bored with the basics. You'll still be limited to twelve emoticons, but now you'll be able to choose among four visual styles for variety.
