Flash 10 beta update means you should, too
The ongoing problems with Flash freezing in Firefox 3 after two seconds of playback resemble nothing less than a game of hot potato. Or perhaps watching two parents have a screaming match, with us regular ol' users playing the part of the sobbing kid that cries, "Why can't you two just get along?"
Adobe has just updated the Flash 10 beta for Windows and Mac, and with it comes the resurgence of the bug that installing the earlier beta fixed. There doesn't seem to be a given reason as to why the old beta is no longer viable, but it does work.
Install this latest version of Flash 10 beta the same way as before to solve the problem. Download the install file, close Firefox, uninstall the old version of Flash, install the new one, and then restart your browser.
Some users we talked to yesterday in our Ask the Editors about Chrome reported seeing the problem in Google's browser, too. This solution should work there, too.
Interestingly, some of the cases where the old Flash 10 beta would fail to fix the problem--like CNN--now work. Nevertheless, nothing would be more preferable than a permanent solution, but as Rafe adroitly points out, the culture clash between Mozilla's open-source and Adobe's closed doors is as likely to be a part of the problem as the code SNAFU itself.

Not actually Adobe's fault. It's the fault of the people writing the detection code. Still, it's annoying.
I have already seen this and was redirected to Adobe...but I was not using a BETA.
= Adobe Flash Player 9.0.124.0 (which was the newest for Macintosh via Safari 3.1.2)
"dance with the one that brung you"
but sites like sleep.fm and slacker.com are not .... erggh
Anyone have issues with those sites and the flash not working ..... i may need to do a complete reinstall ... sigh
make sure you have the Flash IE add installed - get it here http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash
put "http:
www.slacker.com" into IETabs filter list
type slacker.com into the awful bar, hit enter
if it works do the same for sleep.fm and any other problematic sites and buy me a virtual beer next time you're in a virtual bar
if it does not work, disable all you extensions, select the default theme, disable all other plug-ins
now try slacker.com
if it works then enable plugs-ins, themes and extensions ONE AT A TIME in that order; after enabling each item exit FX ensuring you're clearing cache every time you do so -- Options->Privacy->Private Data .... is the place to do that
Test slacker
Eventually slacker will stop working and the cause will the last plug-in, theme extension you enabled - ask yourself if you can live without it, if so, then uninstall it and buy me that virtual beer. If not then use IE to look at slacker etc then buy me that virtual beer.
But Silverlight 2.0 has stopped working in Fx 3.0.1, its definitely an Fx problem, not a NoScript problem like last time. I happened to have all 47 extensions disabled at the time, so I disabled al the other plug-ins - type microsoft.com into the awful bar - Fireface comes tumbling down, Go to Mozillazine to let folks know about the problem, but its not accepting posts.
Whats changed, FireFarce is what changed, from 3.0.0 to 3.0.1, Silverlight is still V2.0 beta 2. And it's not the SL content that's the problem it's the mere presence of SL - when I have Noscript enabled and Silverlight blocked FireFog still crashes..
If I enable IETab and put the SL site (eg microsoft.com) into its filter list then all is well, but running the trident engine is not a viable solution, I might as well use IE8 for everything.
Not sure if the IETab trick will work for folks having Flash problems, I suspect it might - so put the urls of the sites giving you problems into IETab's filter list and you'll probably be closer where you wanna be.
Something has gotten corrupted in your installation. Save your bookmarks file to an external .html using the Bookmarks Manager in Firefox, delete the folder with your profile in it, then start Firefox again and let it build a new profile. If your problem hasn't vanished then..... your Firefox installation has gotten a virus or gotten hosed, and you will need to do a total uninstall/re-install on it.
What plugin was it? The one for Quicktime videos, which I don't bother installing anymore because I don't watch Quicktime videos on my machine anymore.

I would upgrade as soon as a stable 10 version is released

- Hold it one minute. I was a very early adopter of firefox 3, in fact, I think it was day one. I use Firefox exclusively to run my youtube account, and that includes watching videos there. Vimeo works fine, and so far all other flash and embedded video works, and that's with flash 9. I don't know what you're reporting on, but I don't think it's flash or firefox that's the problem, otherwise it should be universal, correct?

- The pervasive stalling of the MP3 Flash player and Flash videos (after 2 seconds) on my machine has occured since Firefox 2. It's been now at least 3 months since I began to experience this 'symptom.' This 'symptom', however, was never consistent.

(21 Comments)When FF3 came out, I expected/hoped that it would put an end to all this strangeness. Now, after all this time, I believe I may have a little insight, at least based upon my probing/experimenting:
I have a MySpace profile. I have an MP3 flash player on it, as well as embedded videos from YouTube, Google, and MySpace. I also have some webpages up that have nothing whatever to do with MySpace except that there are links to go from one to the other, and that, by forcing open a new window (usually target="resource"). I have MP3 flash players on these other pages as well. (I used profilepitstop.com).
Since this 2-sec stalling of the MP3 Flash player and videos using Firefox has been going on for so long, I've noted the following:
Once in a while, about 20% of the time, the MP3 flash player and videos will fully activate upon loading up my MySpace profile in FF.
Of the 80% time that these Flash items are rendered automatically inactive upon directly loading my MySpace profile in FF, invariably the Flash items embedded in my OTHER pages are also rendered inactive upon my loading those pages via links from within my MySpace profile.
When I then clear the FF cache, however, the Flash items in the other pages are restored to their active state, but not so in the MySpace profile.
Conversely, when I first directly load any of the other pages with Flash items, only very rarely have the Flash items not been active. Recently, after having cleared the cache, closed down and re-opened FF, and loaded up these other pages first, their Flash items now in active status, I clicked a link to load up my MySpace profile. The Flash items in the MySpace profile were now active. I proceeded to open other pages via links from within the MySpace profile, and all Flash items were active.
Suspicion:
There is something about MYSPACE.COM ... that is contributing to this mystery. I've noted this from varying angles now for months. When this first started to happen on MySpace.com, I thought perhaps MySpace.com had deliberately sabotaged, for whatever reason, and I was all set to send off a piece of my mind, when just in time the Flash activation returned on an instance of loading the profile.
I think there is something about the background coding in MySpace.com that is inadvertently throwing a wrench into the Flash cogwheels upon DIRECT LOADING of a MySpace profile page (not from a link in a different browser window). I think perhaps that the 20% of the time that the Flash items are active at DIRECT LOADING of the MySpace profile might have something to do with what is or is not present in the cache.
For what it's worth.
