iPhone, schmiPhone. Now wait, don't go calling me an iPhone hater because I'm not. I'm just saying that there are a lot of other hot smartphones out there that deserve as much attention as Apple's starlet, and I've rounded up five of the hottest models.

Whether you're into the BlackBerry Bold or the Samsung Omnia, this group represents some of the most popular and highly anticipated smartphones this year.

I get a lot of reader e-mail wondering about their availability date, pricing, and so on, so I thought I'd try to kill five birds with one stone and answer your questions in one place. Unfortunately, I don't have as much information as you might want. The manufacturers aren't saying much other than what's already out there, but here's what I do know and I've provided my educated guess on when or if we might see these hot numbers here in the States. It's all here at Down the line: Smartphones.

Thanks for all the information!! Though I am disappointed that the Omnia will not be coming to the United States. I had planned on making that my next phone, so I guess I need to search for something else.

Read several articles where they were quite sure that ATT would pick up the Omnia by the end of 3Q. But, it seems they could be wrong or the Samsung rep doesn't want to spill the milk yet. On the other hand, I know of an import store in NYC that has the Omnia for around $650...which is ostensibly a pretty good deal.

I have read that the Omina has passed FCC approval and has a new model number of a sgh I907 indicating that it is coming to ATT. It is releaseing in Germany in August and I hope the USA will be next.

jobinvk, do you have a name and phone number for the import store in NYC? And what's the likelihood that the import version of the Samsung Omnia actually would work on Verizon?

I also just remembered there is a website hosted by Samsung at
http://omnia.samsungmobile.com/
I find it hard to believe now that they Omnia isn't coming to the United States if they gave its own webpage just for the rest of Europe. I hope Samsung is just stringing us a long for a ride.

After 5 years, Firefox faces new challenges

Mozilla helped reshape the Web since releasing Firefox 1.0 five years ago. Now it's got a reawakened Microsoft and Google Chrome to reckon with.

There's a map for that: GPS or smartphone?

Almost every handset comes with mapping software these days, but standalone GPS devices are becoming more affordable than ever.
