Hacker team releases iPhone 2.0 jailbreak

A little more than a week after the release of Apple's iPhone 3G, an unofficial development team has announced the release of software that "jailbreaks" the new device, allowing unauthorized third-party applications to be loaded.

In a post titled "Thanks for waiting," the self-dubbed iPhone Dev Team announced the release of Pwnage 2.0, which also allows unauthorized third-party applications to be loaded on older iPhones and iPod Touchs running the iPhone 2.0 operating system. In hacker jargon, to "pwn" means "to compromise" or "to control."

While the tool allows third-party applications not available at Apple's App Store to be installed on the iPhone 3G, it apparently does not unlock the new phone to allow it to be used on unauthorized cell networks.

However, installation is going smoothly on both the new and older models of iPhone, according to users who posted their comments on the site. One reader told CNET News that the software "works like a charm. Best thing is you can share your custom firmware with others."

While the Dev Team may not have unlocked iPhone 3G, a Brazilian blog reported earlier this week that the iPhone 3G had been unlocked by using a special SIM card adapter that tricks the phone into thinking it's on an approved network.

Of course, the real trick right now is actually getting your hands on one of the new phones. Apple announced last week that it had sold 1 million iPhone 3Gs during its first weekend on the market. And an AT&T representative confirmed earlier this week that most of the company's stores ran out of iPhones the first day the devices were for sale.

I just read an email today from AT&T telling me that the iphone I pre-ordered on launch day was just shipped to my local AT&T store for me to pick up. I plan to try to unlock it to see what happens. I'll keep you posted!

apple left the door open somewhere for them and they just have to open it.
I hightly doupt that apple would compromise sells for at&T.
I mean the subsidy comes from at&t so what do they have to lose?

The mods work, but there are a lot of caveats with them as you would expect with any new release. I would advise waiting a week or so before attempting this. Already they dev team released new versions on the same day as the first release, so it's definitely a work in progress.

At this time, it is Mac-Only. There are no standalone Windows versions available. You would need to obtain a firmware that had been modded by someone on a Mac and I'm not sure I would trust any firmware posted to a torrent.

Whoo hoo! Finally a jailbreak for 2.0. Though Vegaman_Dan is right, the systeim isn't fully delvoped or fixed yet.

still kind of think that Apple decided to go the Nintendo route and actually limit supply to increase demand. "See! We're out of 3G Iphones so it must be popular!" lol not how it works guys sorry.

WEll no need to unlock them Pretty soon as their Exclusive deal will be over soon, even tho I personally think that iPhone is Junk.

It SHould be Interesting what incarnations and BETTER iPhones for T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint they come up with and how it will fare against Future Android Phones.

I think a year and a half to two years the mobile market in the USA is going to look VERY different!
