Update: July 21, 2008, 11:42 a.m., PT: This post has been updated with information about the Sprint Mogul software upgrade.

The Windows Mobile 6.1 updates have been slow to roll out to current Windows Mobile smartphones, but looks like today is the lucky day for Sprint HTC Touch owners. Available for download from HTC's Web site, the software update doesn't just bring the latest mobile operating system. You also get upgraded to EV-DO Rev. A; advanced GPS with support for Sprint Navigation; the Opera Mobile Web browser; and a full onscreen QWERTY keyboard. Hey, not too shabby. And remember, be sure to back up all your data and files before you download that update, otherwise it all goes bye-bye.

A Windows Mobile 6.1 software update has also been released for the Sprint Mogul, which brings support for Sprint TV as well. This adds to the EV-DO Rev. A boost, advanced GPS capabilities, and Task Manager tool that were distributed in a previous software upgrade. The WM 6.1 update is available for download here.

It was taken off the HTC site "due to some [software] issues," and "It should be re-released sometime shortly," according to the Sprint rep I chatted with.

I have spoken with HTC and Sprint and HTC says that the release will be tomorrow July 21st. And Sprint has confirmed that because it is showing in Ensamble that if you a Mogul or Touch that a account aleart has been put on the account about this upgrade. But if you do it at home, you have to contact Sprint about reprograming the phone sience it clears the whole memory. But Sprint.com/chat is much easier.

I have gone through 2 Sprint Touch phones in 2 days trying to install the HTC Windows 6.1 upgrade. At about 10% through it I get a error code and my phone then only can give me the famous 4 color screen. I have had this happen 2 times in 2 days, both times I had to take the phone back to Sprint to get a replacement, BEWARE of this issue. I dont know what the problem is.

I recieved a text message, downloaded an update onto my computer, synced my phone (suppedly), confirmed steps one through four, and now my phone has 4 colors. I'm a Houston resident. I had no electricity up until today. Great timing Sprint. Send out a text message to an update with a bug that disables your phone completely and probably erased my contacts. Worthless.

Do you HAVE to replace the phone? Removing the battery doesn't work, maybe holding the reset button? Does it destroy DCIM cards? I didn't know the 4 colors was famous . . .
