Nintendo has just lifted the veil on a new accessory for the Nintendo Wii remote control. The Wii MotionPlus adapter will attach to the bottom of the Wii remote and give the player a more accurate sense of control by better measuring movements in a 3D space.

Sounds like this could be a blessing for those first-person-shooter games where the control may have been off a step or two. We'll have more on MotionPlus and when you can expect a review soon. Now, here's the press release:

Nintendo introduces the Wii MotionPlus
July 14, 2008
Nintendo's upcoming Wii MotionPlus accessory for the revolutionary Wii Remote controller again redefines game control, by more quickly and accurately reflecting motions in a 3D space. The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player's arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion. Every slight movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their game play. The Wii MotionPlus accessory reconfirms Nintendo's commitment to making games intuitive and accessible for everyone. Nintendo will reveal more details about the Wii MotionPlus accessory and other topics Tuesday morning at its E3 media briefing.

I'm not trying to sound argumentative or insulting but....
It's my opinion that YES Nintendo is trying to make more money with these accessories, they're trying to make money off of the Wii. BUT, they are a company and this is a product. I think that the point is for them to make money, but more importantly for those who buy the Wii to enjoy the end experience. I am still very proud of Nintendo for taking the steps to shake up the industry. Obviously the light saber accessory does not appeal to you or I, but certainly does to a Star Wars fanatic. That said, I have not made up my mind about this next accessory because I haven't used it. But if it does what it is a suppossed to do then I will surely buy it and enjoy it.

Nintendo should bring out is a Wiimote with a re-chargeable lithium battery - I can't be stuffed with AA batteries. Sony got this right with their PS3 controllers - so good just plugging them into the USB port for a recharge.

Ok, I own a Wii, so I'm not bashing it, but is it just me or is the Wii becoming a giant lego set? I mean why so many add on's and accessories? I personally don't go for the whole motion sensor gimmick, I like to play my games old school style. Partly because I'm not 12 or 72 years old. Mark my words, Nintendo will release another flip'n add-on by years end--what's up with that?

Actually, a better question is how will this work with that light-gun framework they trotted out about six months ago or so. Isn't that the preferred configuration for immersive FPS play? Can you attach this extra thingy to the Wiimote in that configuration? I love the idea of a "true" lightsabre experience with the Wii, but I've yet to hear of anyone who's lauding that circumstance (The Force Unleashed won't come out till September, right?), and I have heard from someone who says a sword-fighting element to an already released game leaves much to be desired.

dauntless - I don't think the issue here is the individual pricing of the accessories, yes $20 isn't that bad

its when there's about half a dozen of them and its $120 for the complete set that people complain
