iPhone 2.0 update wreaks havoc on 1st-gen devices

Several bloggers and readers are reporting that when they tried to update the firmware on their iPhones Friday, the devices were "bricked," or rendered unusable.

CNET Blog Network contributor Matt Asay reported around 7 a.m. PDT Friday that when he attempted to use iTunes to update his iPhone, he got an error message and his phone stopped working. He says he can't access contacts or make calls.

CNET News reader Peter8105 reported the same thing Friday morning. Blogger Dave Winer posted the error message he got to his Flickr page Friday morning, and complained of the same bricking phenomenon. He does report that he can still make emergency calls, however.

Just from the few reports trickling in, it appears this is only happening to people who tried to update their firmware Friday. There were no such reports when many iPhone owners were able to update their devices Thursday.

Apple has not responded to requests for comment yet, but at first glance the problem appears to be stemming from the severe overload Apple's iTunes servers experienced Friday as people across the world came out to buy the iPhone 3G.

We'll keep updating the story, but let us know in the comments section if you're having similar problems with the 2.0 firmware update Friday.

Update 11:20 a.m. PDT: A reader added the text of a note he received from Apple in the comments. Apple blames the problem on "network congestion on the iTunes server," but says you should be able to update or restore the firmware once the traffic dies down.

Update 2:20 p.m. PDT: Many readers are reporting that they have been able to restore or update their iPhones now.

It happened to me in Michigan. My "network connection was reset" in my iTunes 7.7. Now my phone has no bars and will not do anything. I'm stuck with no upgrade and no working iPhone.

My iPhone is now an iBrick. Hope I can get this resolved before my business trip on Sunday at noon...

"Apple has not responded to requests for comment yet, but at first glance the problem appears to be stemming from the severe overload Apple's iTunes servers experienced today as people across the world came out to buy the iPhone 3G. " Severe overload? Are you trying to blame the users you hyped into a frenzy? This is not an overload, this is a global product launch. Where was the planning? Why didn't they run extra server farms today?

Yep...it happened to me. I have no idea what the fix will be as communication with iTunes is blocked to. The message I now get when I plug my phone into iTunes is "We could not complete your iTunes store request. An unknown error (-4) occurred." As well, on my iphone, I get a picture of iTunes and a USB cord. When I disconnect my phone and try to restart it, nothing happens. This is frustrating as I use my iphone for almost of my phone contacts, so essentially I am sans phone right now. I have already called everyone I know to not update their phones until this is figured out.

One of the the thousands (millions?) with a bricked 1st-gen iPhone. Downloaded 2.0 just fine this morning about 8AM PST, and since then I've been "unable to reach the Itunes Store" to verify my phone. Which has left me with NO PHONE SERVICE - completely unacceptable. It is now almost 3 hours later and I'm still "toggling" back and forth (the only reason I'm still trying is because of people in the Apple forums who say this has worked). The most frustrating part is the lack of information coming from Apple. Are the servers down? Will I eventually get through or should I wait until tonight? tomorrow? Will the 2.0 update even work once I have verified or is this whole day shot?

Is this happening also on upgrading the itouch to 2.0? I was planning on doing this tonight but if it is going to brick to device then i will wait.

Microsoft could make some great commercials to combat the Mac & PC commercials. Imagine poor 1.0 owners moping around with Ben Folds "Brick" playing in the background...

I received an error 13 when trying to upgrade my 4GB first-gen. I suspect the problem was not enough space. It was in recovery mode and I had to restore to 1.1.4 (at which point all music/videos were gone). Reinstallation of 2.0 worked after that.

Here's the response I got at 10:00am this morning when I called in about my iBrick:

Dear ,

Due to network congestion on the iTunes server, you may not be able to update or restore the software on your iPhone. Once the congestion has decreased the software should be available for you to update. It would be advisable to attempt the update later on today.

If you have attempted to restore your iPhone and it is currently in recovery mode, you will not be able to use your iPhone until the software has been restored or updated. A temporary solution may be to use your SIM in another AT&T phone or have your calls forwarded to a phone you have access to.

We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused.

If you would like to voice your concerns to Apple about this, feel free to visit apple.com/feedback

Thank-you for your patience on this matter.

Regards,
Your Apple Care Team

THIS IS RIDICULOUS! APPLE SHOULD HAVE ANTICIPATED THIS. My phone is bricked and I need it for business!!!! THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. IT BOGGLES THE MIND THAT THEY COULDN'T HAVE PLANNED FOR THIS. . . .AWFUL. It's one thing if it's an ipod or computer, but phones are lifelines for people. This is unacceptable. It's a responsibility that they didn't take seriously. I AM ANNNNNNNGGGGGGRRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYY.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not making excuses for Apple....but whenever you have a business, it's always wise to be sure that all non-critical updates are proven to not impact your 'business' before applying them. This is standard practice when IT upgrades a computer, why would you not follow this same advice with your phone?

Not only am I super mad that I bought my 1st gen iPhone in March and am not eligible to receive a new iPhone - now I'm stuck with one that doesn't work because of this server overload problem... What a joke...! I should just hawk the darn thing and go to a new network...

I'm in Los Angeles and have the same problem. Now getting the (-4) error message. Very upsetting as I use my phone for my business and can't imagine how many messages I'm getting on the voicemail that I can't retrieve and how much business I am potentially losing. FUN! You would think that a) Apple would have a contingency plan for something like this, and b) they would at least give us updates on the website as to when they feel it might be fixed.
I think everyone this has affected should get compensated in some way ... like a credit from AT&T or something for the MONUMENTAL inconvenience.

2:00 pm eastern time and still no phone. I understand a server error, but all day? Really? Sorry, Apple - no sympathy here.

At approximately 0830 I decided to update my Iphone. However, even though I have Itunes 7.7, the process did not complete. My phone has been unusable since then and all I was told from Apple was "Our servers are being overloaded and we currently do not have a definite time to correct the problem. Please be patient and try again later." I find it hard to believe that Apple did not think of this before, it could have been so much easier to offer the update before the 3G came out. From my point of view, current Iphone customer should have had the advantage of enjoying the update before this date. I am very disappointed in Apple.

After toggling b/n music and iPhone for 30 minutes, phone is synced...

before it finally synced, were you able to use your phone? mine had the itunes symbol for a while with the cord telling me to plug it in and was only available for emergency calling, but eventually it said on the phone itself that it was activated again, however, none of my information will sync from my computer--so i have a working phone, but none of my contacts, pictures, music, etc...is this the same thing you had happen?

My phone is in a slightly different state. It says ~emergency calls only,~ but, I am actually able to send and receive calls. I am not able to access my voice mail, or use any of the iPhone features. The contacts button is non-responsive while talking on the phone.

Is anyone else's phone in this state?

I have an iPhone 1.0 and was lucky enough to download the 2.0 update. Now my iPhone bricked, as well. Just another shrimp on the barbie. As of 2:30 ET there is still the unknown (-4) error when trying to connect to the iTunes store via the iPhone pane.

My 1st gen. brick has been plugged in since about 8 this morning. iTunes updated but firmware bricked my brick and I like saying, "brick". Hey, at least I sync my brick @ work so if it's not fixed by the time my van pool leaves, I won't be able to bother any of my friends or family this weekend... Home CPU motherboard died so no chance of syncing to a different iTunes library
