Sony releases nonbroken 2.41 update for PS3

by Jeff Bakalar

New and improved!

While the reported cases were few and far between, last week's PlayStation 3 firmware update 2.40 rendered a select few consoles completely useless. Sony had removed the upgrade just a day after the highly anticipated patch was released and claimed it was "looking into it."

Well it seems a week was all that was needed as the very bug-free, nonbroken firmware Version 2.41 is currently available for download. All of the features we told you about appear to remain intact in addition to a newer platinum trophy icon.

We should note that if you were one of the unlucky few to get a bum PS3 as a result of the upgrade, we recommend you get in touch with Sony customer support right away. The problem doesn't appear to be fatal, meaning your console can most likely be revived--unlike those nasty red-ring-of-death errors the Xbox 360 suffers from.

This is why "updates" are always questionable. Hardly anything useful to the consumer is "updated." Flaws usually appear, DRM, malware, and phone-home-ware are usually the items updated, not content.

Never, never, never, never, NEVER install an update like this in the first two weeks of availability. Never. Not an OS service pack, not a console software upgrade, not a firmware upgrade, nothing. Just wait a couple weeks and let the guy with the happy trigger finger find the problems.

You're FORCED to update to connect to PSN. So, no multiplayer for you if you dare to refuse the update from your Sony overlords.

Actually, you SHOULD update immediately, because with all the differences in systems out there.... you aren't going to know whether your system has a problem until you install the update ON YOUR SYSTEM.

It's "Few and far between"!

How do so many people get this wrong!?! And someone who is PAID to write professionally no less!

"unlike those nasty red-ring-of-death errors the Xbox 360 suffers..." -- wrong, i revived a lot of them :) for friends who had the trouble. I am now using 2 of them that are revived from rrod for 1 year now, normal use no problem (got both as broken from ebay).

I guess your paranoia comments must be associated with the announcement of the new X-Files movie coming out soon...how quaint...

I guess your suggestion would work, except that some of the updates do not let you even play games unless you run the stupid update. Oh well, hope it doesnt happen again.

Doesn't seem like it should have happened in the first place. I am sure that Sony installed this update on every version of their PS3 that they could reasonably have. There must have been something different with home systems that created this problem.

I have in the past tried to refrain from the arguments for or against a console however, this has got to be one of the most lopsided and amatuerish attempts at an article that I have read. The shame is that this article is linked from the CNETs homepage and not some SONY fanboy site.
This article bascially states that this Sony update was issued to fix an update that apparently rendered two or three whiners PS3s unusable and then somehow tries to connect that to an XBOX 360 issue as if MS had anything to do with SONYs poor QA and coding.
The reality is SONY released a update that bricked quite a few PS3s, was glitchy, and did not work as advertised. It is just as bad as the red ring of death to those whose systems where rendered "bricked". Finally, this fanboy article has the audacity to claim this fix is now perfect as if he was somehow doing QA for the "second patch". This means that if SONY ever realeases another fix for the PS3 I should be able to sue this well informed reporter.
Why not do the honest thing and slam SONY as they deserve for breaking services and causing an interruption in service for people who have purchased their 600 movie playing console.

CNET should require some journalist integrity upon items linked as news rather than fanboy rants.

2.41 update shut down my PS3's BD drive. I have been to the Sony Playstation forums and have read multiple posts from users reporting the same problem with the 40G PS3. After the 2.41 update is installed the PS3 will no longer recognize any games, BD's, DVD's, or CD's. The BD drive just stops working. I also have not read a single post where Sony actually admits there is something wrong with 2.41.

so what are you gonna do with your system now? i've already gone through 4 ps3 systems,,,,,yes 4!!! so i got my new one yesterday and its asking me to update to that "2.41 upgrade". im scared of
upgrading cause of all the bad reviews on it! what should i do?....

1 hour after my 60 GB PS3's 2.41 upgrade, my CD drive started freezing while playing Blu-Ray and PS3 games. At first, PS2 games and and regular movie CDs weren't affected. The problem got progressively worse over a couple of days time. Now, nothing will play...at all. The PS3 OS is fine, just the CD drive is hosed. I've been checking Sony's blog boards and we are not alone in our misery. There are plenty of other people having problems. My PS3 is now going back to Sony (thankfully under warranty).

By the way, this article is full of ****. The deliberate use of such words and phrases like "nonbroken", "error-free", "unlucky few, "very bug free" shows that the author is so Sony friendly, that he must work for them in some capacity (or at least own stock in Sony).
