The future is now.

With Sony releasing version 2.40 of the PlayStation 3 firmware today, it's no surprise that talk about a new Xbox 360 dashboard update has surfaced.

Aside from the normal list of technical updates, this rumored dashboard update will supposedly incorporate an entire new graphical user interface as well. Right now, reports point toward a sort of 3D experience, deviating from the current "blade" system. There's also talk that this alternative GUI will take advantage of some sort of motion-control device yet-to-be-announced by Microsoft.

Kotaku describes the new interface as a nod to the control scheme in the film Minority Report--and now it seems that they were really on to something. They're reporting that the company responsible for the new dashboard design involves the man who actually helped create the motion-controlled effects in the 2002 film. Small world.

We'll get you the latest details on the rumored new Xbox 360 interface as they come. While you're waiting for that, why not tell us what you'd like to see in it?

Maybe this dashboard update will also increase the number of people who will jump up and down on their couches eh?

I would like to see them not do anything stupid in it. The interface as it stands now works fine for what it needs to do, and though it may benefit from the addition of some features, it does not need a major overhaul. The last time Microsoft overworked something that merely needed incremental updates we got Vista. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

There's nothing wrong with Vista. It's a far better OS than XP IMO. Don't believe all the FUD coming from the anti-MS folks.

What are you talking about VISTA is amazing. You ask any computer devolper or anyone who uses it. AMAZING!!!!

The quote "motion-control device yet-to-be-announced by Microsoft" could just be the vision camera. Using technology similar to the one used in ps2's famous game "EyeToy"

It kind of makes you wonder what they'll come up with knowing that there's no gyroscope or any kind of motion control device in the xbox controller. If the dashboard update is accompanied by an expensive accessory then I'll pass...

All I want to see change is the X360 to upconvert DVD's

The Xbox360 will and does upconvert Standard DVD's, from 720P to 1080i/P with the use of Component or HDMI cables.

The 360 does upconvert DVD's, if you use hdmi or vga, just not over component.

This could be interesting... or it could be very bad. I think they should still allow people to use the the Dashboard that is there now if they don't like the new one. Oh, the whole motion control thing is based on the rumor that MS is making a PS3-style motion controler. You know, where it still looks like a controller, but has some motion capabilities. Well, at least let me see it at e3, MS.

one small thing that annoys me is when im on the guide looking at achievements, and when i start up a game it closes the guide. i start my xbox up with start from disc enabled, but i want full control over the guide.

its just a small thing, but it annoys me, i would like to look at achievements while the beginning credits or the actual game load.

I'm going to need to buy a new device to motion control the Dashboard? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. People don't buy console addons even if they're useful.

We need multichannel support for video media files other than windows media files. I have encoded my dvd collection to avc hd, but without multichannel support I am limited to just a two channel stream. I hear the ps3 accepts multichannel stream, so why not add this capability to the new update. Just a suggestion Microsoft.

I have a 120 gig hard drive, so why are the downloads still limited to six at a time?
If I start to download a file and it fails (too many files in line) the file is still marked as downloaded;
Videos that are downloaded such as "Major's Minute", have lots of interruptions for reloading and the sound continues after the video has stopped. Why can't the video and sound stop at the same time so they can continue once more has been download or why can't the video play and download at the same time?
