We've just been on the phone to a spokesperson for Asus, who confirmed that the company will launch a 10-inch version of its popular Eee PC on Tuesday at the Computex trade show in Taiwan.

The spokesperson said that the larger-screened model should be on sale in the U.K. in November. No other details are confirmed at the moment, but we would be amazed if the new Eee didn't use the new Intel Atom chips, which are due for launch at the same time.

This is significant, as the lack of Atom was our one big complaint with the last-generation Eee. The processors promise to consume considerably less power than previous generations and Intel hopes they'll be used in everything from slim desktops to mobile phones.

We'll bring you the latest as it breaks on Tuesday.

I'm a little confused. I just looked up prices on these today out of curiosity and a 4G model with an 8inch screen goes for like $550. Why would I buy this over a Gateway that costs $600 with 3G memory, a 14inch screen, and a 160G hard drive? I just don't see the point. Maybe these things just weren't made for me.

I agree with the above.
I was most gung-ho about the Eee or its equivalent as I practically live out of my backpack, but I burned out from all the talk about it. I've been using a 2.8Ghz Celeron laptop for 4 years, and I've now decided that speed is more important than weight.
Now Dell has the Inspiron 1530 with Blu-Ray Optical drive, let alone that you can download HD movies (Wireless-n, or WiMax???) and watch them on one of the Core 2 Duo $600 laptops like the one mentioned above.
