The Murphy bed of computer desks

There was a time not long ago that home designers seemed obsessed with finding ways to showcase LCD and plasma TVs in innovative stands and other furniture. Lately, however, many efforts appear to be focused on computer desks.

Styles have crossed the entire spectrum, from minimalist designs to full gold leaf. But a common thread runs through all these models: space conservation and multiple uses for the desks. That's where the "Sync Desktop" comes in.

The desk features a hideaway display and keyboard, as well as built-in peripherals and storage compartments, according to BornRich. Just a concept at present, it exists only in the mind of U.K. designer Gareth Battensby so far. Which is a shame, because the closest thing we've seen in reality is a desk with trap doors.

It seems like this would be a good idea, however I'm not sure it will live up to its own coolness. Switching between the computer and desk mode would get old quick. Hardware failures would mean redecoration, at least temporarily.

I like the idea of having a PC nearby and not having to look at a PC though, I guess someone needs to weigh just how bad a decent LCD monitor looks on a desk. To me isn't not that big of a deal as we tend to do most of our work on computers now a days, so I probably wouldn't ever really need to hide it.
