Wii virtual console releases for this week

by Jeff Bakalar

Today we get some love from an arcade racing classic along with everyone's favorite caveman boy in distress.

  • Cruis'n USA (1996, Nintendo 64, 1,000 Wii points): While many would argue that Cruis'n USA doesn't do its arcade counterpart justice, there's still plenty of racing to enjoy without the need for a roll of quarters. Enjoy three difficulty levels as you enjoy scenic races across the country.

  • Wonder Boy (1987, Sega Master System, 500 Wii points): In Wonder Boy, you'll play as Tom-Tom, a caveman child forced to free his kidnapped girlfriend. Collect fruit and eggs along the way, and you just may survive battling the monster who has taken her.

My only complaint about Nintendo 64 virtual console games is that you can only play them using the Gamecube Controller or Classic Controller.

The Gamecube controller was great for Gamecube games and even the new Smash Brothers Brawl game, but for N64 games? It's HORRIBLE!!! The button layout of the GC controller is completely different from the N64's, it makes playing N64 games on the Wii a living nightmare! And Nintendo still doesn't want to release a better Classic Controller for the Wii where you don't have to plug your Wiimote into the Classic Controller! Why wasn't the Classic Conroller WIRELESS and has it's own battery compartment in the first place?

But Wonder Boy? ooooOOooohhh... so tempting to buy. I still have about 1k points left, and I might buy that. I love Master System virtual console games because you can just use the Wiimote! No fuss!

The GC controller seemed fine for Super Mario 64 to me.
