HD DVD blowout

Get your HD DVDs while you can.

The largest big-box electronics retailer in the U.S. looks to be clearing its HD DVD disc inventory. TG Daily reports that a Best Buy in Dublin, Calif., has all of its HD DVD movies on sale for $9.99, and all HD DVD TV shows for 70 percent off.

TG Daily also checked Best Buy stores in Chicago, and in one case, HD DVD movies were nowhere to be found. Upon further questioning of employees, it was discovered that HD DVDs could be bought from the inventory in the back for 30 percent off. But not for long, as that particular store said it plans to send all of its inventory back to the manufacturers.

Toshiba was the leading producer of HD DVD players, but said in February it planned to cease production of them. That was just after all of the major Hollywood studios went Blu-ray only. So, this news isn't surprising as much as it is fortunate for HD DVD owners still licking their wounds from the recently concluded format war.

Best Buy in Fort Collins, Colorado

I was in the Best Buy in Fort Collins, Colorado, and I was surprised to see the HD-DVDs still being sold right next to the BlueRay disks, quite near the front of the store. They were, however, 30% off, which still made them just as expensive as DVDs of the same movies.

I read this yesterday, then immediately took off for my local Best Buy. Upon arrival, I searched and searched for HD DVD discs, but could only find BluRay. I asked a worker and was promptly told that they had sent back all of the HD DVD discs last week.

It's not just best buy. I've been keeping an eye out for a good clearance at several stores and I've noticed stock disappearing here in wisconsin. For example... I've been to several different targets over the past two weeks and stock levels went from normal to nothing overnight. I was hoping to get some good deals but it looks like most manufactures arejust sending the stock elsewhere. There are good deals online if your interested.

I was at the BEst Buy in Holmdel, NJ yesterday and no HD-DVDs on the rack. I didn't know about the selling out of the back but I still figure they sent the movies back. I saw last week they had all HD-DVDs on sale for 30% off.

Amazon has been lowering their prices rapidly. I will be picking some as the price drops. Bluray may be the winner in the HD wars, but as far as I am concerned, HD DVD offered a better picture and features than those found on Bluray. I guess, however, that I am a lucky one as I have the only up-to-date Bluray player, which is the PS3.

Um Conker, HD DVD did not produce a better picture. From what I seen and compared blu ray owned it. HD DVD is just a make shift HD solution. thats why it lost huge. It was just a bad copy cat of blu ray. Also it didn't have any more features than blu ray.

Between Ebay and Amazon I scooped up 10 movies and the Planet Earth series for about $130! I may eventually purchase Blu Ray, but for now, $10 HD DVD's are the deal of the week. Oh, and Best Buy is sending me my $50 gift card for my HD DVD 360 add on.... yeah, I'm happy ;-)

What are the stores and original distributors/manufacturers going to do with these millions of HD-DVDs now that nobody wants them anyway? I can't begin to imagine the environmental damage it does with all those chemical-laden discs dumped into local landfills everywhere.
