Ready to rumble in April

(Credit: Sony)

If you're waiting for Sony to finally release its new rumbling DualShock 3 wireless controller here in North America, you won't have much longer to go. Today, Sony announced that the wireless DualShock 3 will be available sometime in April with a somewhat hefty $54.99 price tag (the current nonrumble wireless controller has a list price of $5 less).

Sony also had a few other PlayStation-related announcements. To coincide with the much-anticipated North American launch of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in late Q2 2008, Sony said it will introduce a PS3 bundle that includes an 80GB PS3, MGS4, and a DualShock 3 wireless controller for $499 (MSRP).

In case you're wondering what "late Q2" means, think June. That's also when Sony will release a limited-edition God of War PSP Entertainment Pack for $199.99 (MSRP). According to the press release, the bundle will include a "'Deep Red' PSP with God of War himself, Kratos, silk-screened on the back of the unit," a copy of God of War: Chains of Olympus for PSP, the movie Superbad on UMD, and a PlayStation Network voucher to download Syphon Filter: Combat Ops from the PlayStation Store. The standalone version of God of War: Chains of Olympus arrives March 4.

What's this all add up to? Well, a little pressure for Microsoft and Nintendo. With Sony hot off its Blu-ray victory, a couple of AAA PS3 titles on the horizon, and a little rumble in its controllers, things are looking up for PlayStation fans. What do you think?

Hunkered down in New York City, Executive Editor David Carnoy covers the gamut of gadgets and writes his Fully Equipped column, which carries the tag line "The electronics you lust for." He's also the author of "Knife Music," a novel. E-mail David. Follow David on Twitter.

It's about time!

I've had a PS3 since day one and I've only played one game on it. ALL games get Xbox 360 preference because of the lack of rumble. I wish they would redesign the controller a bit. I find the 360 controller much more comfortable. Especially for 1st person shooters. (I don't like my thumbs bumping together) All told... This is great news. Maybe my PS3 will do something other than Blu-Ray this year.

its a 360 controler on the outside with ps3 on the inside

Could've Done What I Did
by goldberg3971 February 27, 2008 12:20 PM PST
Just go onto eBay and get it. It's like $5 extra but it's worth it. The only difference is the packaging is in Japanese. And I got the ceramic white version. If I remember correctly I read on some site that the white will stay Japanese exclusive and all USA gets is the black.

FINALLY SONY!!!
by hismerecry February 27, 2008 2:44 PM PST
Well finally we see the rumble feature. I guess I can understand why since the SIXAXIS? Wireless Controller utilizes breakthrough technology and a highly sensitive motion sensing system so as the user moves the controller, the game moves with it. So putting in a rumble feature must have definitely been a huge challange to accomplish! Much kudos to Sony!!!

Battery Life?
by thowe21 February 27, 2008 3:02 PM PST
I wonder what the DS3 will do to the battery life of the controller. I've been pretty happy with the Sixaxis battery life, but all that constant rumbling has got to use up a lot of juice.

I dont think its that big of a deal, I just put off buying another controller to add on for a few months. I had to go with only two for a while but it'll be worth it.

Don't really miss it.
by cpopken February 27, 2008 8:48 PM PST
To be honest I don't really miss the lack of rumble. I always thought of it more of a gimmick than anything. But some people can't seem to live without it so this is a very good move. At least they priced it right.
