Vulcan slashes price of FlipStart

Do you like me more for $699?

(Credit: CNET Networks Inc.)

At its starting price of $1,999, the Vulcan FlipStart was egregiously overpriced when we reviewed it last spring. A $500 price cut last fall failed to impress, so yesterday Paul Allen and company lopped more than half off the price, lowering it to $699.

Tell me, are you more likely to consider a UMPC (FlipStart or otherwise) for $699 or do you feel that still too much to pay?

Coincidentally, I'll be posting a full review of the Wibrain B1 later today (covered previously on Crave here and here), which is the cheapest UMPC I've seen--priced at, you guessed it, $699. The review will be live later today here.

I still don't know what I'd use a UMPC for...
by Dirk VanNerden January 17, 2008 11:09 AM PST
I'm a person who does not like to text mesaage. I also prefeer a desktop to a laptop. This is a good price point on the product though, Depending on the spec's of course.
I would be more likely to carry somthing like this vs. an ipod, but not an iphone.

But to be perfectly honest the only company that could get me to buy a UMPC would be Nintendo. A cross between a pc and portable gamming device, that comes with a p2p phone as well. Let me know when somthing like that comes out.

BTW: this unit look a little too wide for my pocket.
Is that a umpc in your pocet, or you just happy to
see me?

Now we know WHY the price dropped...

If you go to the linked page at the top, the page it directs to now says that activation of the Sprint based EVDO Rev A connection is MANDATORY... In other words, this is like a cell phone - you need to sign up for a 2 yr contract to get the unit at that price. It's, no doubt, being subsidised much like a cell phone.
