A modern wall unit to be shaken, not stirred

As noted before, the dreaded '70s-era wall unit is making a 21st century comeback, in no small part because flat-screen TVs have obviated the need for the equally cliched entertainment armoire. And we're relieved to report that, unlike their predecessors, the newer generation doesn't require gouging one's eyes out.

Not surprisingly, the Italians have taken the concept to an entirely new plane. Their latest accomplishment is the "Monos" line by MisuraEmme, a flexible modular apparatus that includes a bar as well as appropriate space and compartments for all manner of media gadgetry in a museum-like structure of reflective glass. Trendir says it's even made with a special laquer finish that "elminates the release of toxic particles into the air," giving you points for being green as well as tasteful.

The only thing we'd change is that bottle of Jack Daniels on the top shelf. This setting clearly calls for a martini.

When we are talking about modern wall units, we are mainly talking about modular systems with plenty of sections to choose from in many sizes, color combination and shapes. There are almost no limitations as to building or customizing wall units to meet your needs and requirements. Most of the lines use clean lines and cubical forms but once again there is no limitation and lots of companies provide rounded shapes units to satisfy your tastes.

Colors, commonly used for modern wall unit are wenge (dark oak) or light oak wood veneer or black, orange, white or off-white finish (all lacquered matt or high gloss). Frosted, clear or painted in matching black, orange, red, white or off-white color glass is also used for highlighting a modern look of your wall unit.

You must know that using standing units, as well as using wall-mounted units will allow you to create your wall unit not only geometrically situated but positioned asymmetrically, on different levels of space.

Lots of TV stands or wall mounted TV panels used in modern wall units allow you to take care of your TV and appliances placement, consequently creating a modern entertainment center. Most of those are wisely designed in a way to hide all cords either behind back panel or wall mounted panels.

Most of the modern wall units are transferable, same modern wall unit may be used as a wall mounted or standing unit, left or right side unit. You don?t have to worry about relocation; you can build a new wall unit, which will fit in your new living room, using the units you already have. You can also order some new units to the existed wall unit without ruining the complete structure.

So what is a modern platform bed? Basically it is a bed frame, which can support the mattress without the use of the box spring, usually wooden slots or plywood panels are used as a mattress support in this case. This mattress support technology extends possibilities for modern designers in creation of almost unlimited new looks for your modern bedroom. Now you can choose from a quite bit of designs and styles which can satisfy any taste and needs. Most known styles in creation of modern platform bed are:

Japanese style - very low to the ground, usually with the wide side panels (5" and up). An idea for this stile was taken from traditional Japanese tatami mats.

Storage platform bed - Usually 10" and up from the ground, placed underneath the bottom of the bed, used as an additional storage without ruining the look of the bed. Perfect for small apartments. The platform bed still looks modern and you have an extra storage space.

Modern platform bed with an extended headboard - extra-wide headboard, sometimes wall-mounted. Headboard is usually long enough to cover the nightstands. Usually 125+" in length and about 30" in height.

Bed frame could be upholstered or wood veneered. Different finishes are used, like dark walnut, cherry, or most popular wenge (dark chocolate brown). Often, color and material combination are used, such as wood veneer/leather, wenge with high gloss lacquered colors like red, orange or white.

Please be careful when choosing the mattress for your modern platform bed. Do not take mattress higher then 8", maximum 9". Otherwise, high mattress will hide your headboard and ruin a modern look of your bed.
