Police and press wise up to crime clips on YouTube

by Joseph Kaminski

We've just witnessed a potentially disturbing marriage of basic street crime and the instant worldwide audience provided by video sharing and social networking sites such as YouTube and MySpace.

Criminals have often recorded their exploits for fun, but the ease of online sharing means that almost everyone can now witness assorted muggings, fights, and robberies from the safety of a laptop screen. At the same time, crimes posted to the Web get instant attention from law enforcement and the press, essentially acting as online wanted posters for the perpetrators. A perfect example is a recent subway attack video first discovered on YouTube on November 7, and since covered by the New York Daily News, the New York Post, Court TV's The Smoking Gun Web site, and other media outlets.

The video, allegedly shot by a New York film student named Kadejra Holmes, shows a group of teenage girls riding New York's A train, arguing with, and eventually attacking, a male passenger. After the incident, Kadejra posted the video on YouTube, naming the clip, "Jump Up to Get Beat Down," after an old Brand Nubians track called "Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down."

Holmes was soon contacted by The Smoking Gun, and after she denied being part of the group, claiming to be just an innocent bystander with a video camera, she deleted the video from YouTube and took down her MySpace page. But, nothing that's been posted online is ever really gone, and popular blogs such as Gawker as well as the Web sites of New York's daily newspapers have all reposted the video and written about the attack.

In Thursday's New York Post, Holmes' parents claim, "... their daughter did not know the teens involved in the assault and had just captured the incident on camera as she innocently rode the train," but they also admit that she had been arrested back in September for taking part in a separate subway attack.

Police are reportedly trying to identify both the attackers and the victim from the video.

Oh Noooo some guy got hurt by some girls
by npseattle December 6, 2007 7:14 PM PST
Our media must be out-of-sync or looking for new sources of ratings. If that guy ever files a report, he'll admit to being a pansy and will get many more beatings in the future for saying jack. Who hasn't been jumped. And seriously, we've been jumped by people much bigger than these girls. This crap isn't newsworthy. You find out who they are and you make sure they get the crap beat out of them in response.

wow, that had to be one of the most immature posts

No, not everyone has been jumped. I don't know what ghetto you grew up in, but in civilized society this type of behaviour is not tolerable. These "girls" should be prosecuted if they can be caught. people need to learn that you can't go around doing whatever you feel like to others without re-percussions.

Some people were raised not to hit women, it is just a shame when these young women act like animals. And attitudes like this comment are just another example of what is wrong with this world. This kind of behaviour is never acceptable.

In response to npseattle you and these girls need to grow up.

Who starts fights on the subway?? And yo, the amount of times the N-word comes out of their mouth?? I find that to be total disrespect. Not only to their parents & grandparents who had to live in the era that being call that word actually meant something, but to themselves. Why go around calling another race the word that is meant to bring you down??

As for that guy, if it was me I would've went buck on all 4 of them. They're little kids. I grew up being taught not to hit women. But on the other hand you have to know when to defend yourself and in this situation one of those girls needed to be chin-checked.

I hope the police find these girls.

Sad state of the world

This is just proof of how messed up your world has become. Frankly, if I were that guy, I would defend myself. I don't care if I'm fighting people with a Y-chromosome or not.

And the first poster is just.... and idiot.

Stupid Girls / Dumb Guy
by subway008 December 8, 2007 10:29 AM PST
This guy is dumb he kept on talking and led them on. These girls were looking for trouble and sure they will proably all continue to look for it. This guy was stupid. He could have avoided it. If he had defended himself it would have been worse guys would have jumped in and really hurt him so hes not a total moron.

Yes, my last comment was pretty immature. I was jumped last year in a situation where, apparently, the perpetrators found it pretty amusing and took pride in the event, so my response was somewhat biased at the time. In reality, they should have been prosecuted for battery and assault.
