Remembering James Kim

by Crave staff

One year ago today, we learned of the death of our dear friend and colleague, James Kim. James was, both at work and at home, a kind, intelligent, exuberant presence. We miss him very much.

To keep James' memory alive, we want to revisit the video tribute we created when we first heard the news. We hope you enjoy these video clips from CNET.com and Crave as much as we have.

In his honor, James' family and friends have established the James Kim Technology Foundation (JKTF). The foundation provides San Francisco public schools, and the children who attend them, access to emerging technologies like the ones James covered every day for CNET.com and Crave. You can learn more about JKTF at the foundation's Web site.

I can't believe its already been a year, time really does pass so quickly. He was honestly one of my favorite people here at Cnet and he is still missed by the users I'd like to think. God bless the Kim family. R.I.P. James.

As someone who didn't know him personally, but sincerely enjoyed his work, wit, and intelligent reviews, I wish only peace and comfort to his family and friends. James made a difference for CNET viewers, and was clearly a wonderful father and husband.

I didn't know James Kim, but it really has been a while since I remember going to cnet.com back in 2001 to find the right mp3 player for myself... Now I'm back looking for the right cell phone... and I wondered, where did James Kim go? He will be missed. Sincere condolences to his family.

I remember hearing about this story a year ago. I remember thinking to myself, would any husband and father do that? That's the kind of man i aspire to be.

TO GIVE YOUR LIFE TO SAVE YOUR FAMILY, A TRUE HERO
by scottyrob December 6, 2007 7:13 AM PST
He was always my favorite editor of a great cast. I always looked foward to his reviews and valued his opinions. He was very knowledgeable but always cool, calm and humble. He always kept everything fun around Cnet. When I heard about his death and the sacrifice that he made, I was very sad that he passed away but was very proud that he put his family first no matter what it cost. I still look back at times at old reviews just to see he see his cool calm reviews and wished that he was still with his family and friends. My heart goes out to them.

R.I.P. James Kim

Im getting goose bumps just thinking about this.
I always waited to see what player he was going to review next. Not only for the knowledge of technology, but I appreciated his expertise, wit, and general personality.

Even though CNET employs a great all-star cast that I do appreciate and that keep me coming back to the site, James was my favourite.

May you rest in peace Mr. James Kim

James is an inspiration

Crave, thank you for honoring James' memory with this post. Our fond memories is what keeps him alive to all of us. He is in our hearts (and ears). For a long time, I kept the Buzz out loud that was released right after his death, it was comforting to hear his voice. He is an inspiration and is deeply missed. I am sending my love to his wife and daughters on this special day.

Thanks for keeping this rememberance page up, it linked alot of the cnet family together including cnet's long time fans from day 1. This one is from Nebraska. Again, thank you all Cnet for all you have did for the computer savvy community in us all.

Feels Like Yesterday.
by digimark December 6, 2007 11:06 AM PST
It still feels strange and raw -- just like it was yesterday that the first word came over the news that James and his family were missing. Like two different worlds -- the one before the first emergency news flash and everything that came after. It was only a minute after that initial flash of worry that I thought, of course they'll be found -- James had all those technology products, GPS, etc. Boy, did we learn a hard lesson about the limits of our gadgets.

Like many I only knew James from his work here on CNET and at TechTV, but seeing him so often made him seem like family, comfortable and entertaining to be around. His banter with the other techies and showing off cool gadgets was a real thrill that I'll miss. All of us can be proud of him that when presented with danger to his family, James stepped up with clarity of purpose and love and did what he had to do to save them, knowing that it might not work but having to try. We can only hope we'll have his courage should our turn come. I also hope Kati Kim never second-guesses their decisions over those two weeks; hindsight is always 20/20 and they were brave in a situation they never expected.

It will be up to all of us to tell what stories we have of James Kim to his children and the world at large, that he never be forgotten.

Rest-n-Peace
by jc_ December 6, 2007 11:46 AM PST
Had Mr. Kim assessed, considered, and took action he may still be alive. Evidently, Mr. Kim did not apply any common sense or risk management methods, and did not know his surroundings at all, during his grave situation. Unfortunately, the elements beat his thoughtfulness of saving his family. My shop used his accident as an example of what not to do when planning a trip. Nevertheless, my heart goes out to his loved ones. I am sure the guy was very intelligent to say the least, too bad the great outdoors bet him.
RIP

You are disgusting

and a horrible person to sit there and try to point out what the man did wrong
when he's been dead for a year, and this Crave post was only to remember him
as a good person, father and husband. But no, you felt the need to crap all over
that by trying to point out his mistakes. You should seriously rethink your
attitude and try to show some consideration for him and those who really cared
about him.
I beg to differ...
by Rod Roddy December 6, 2007 5:19 PM PST
I would have done the same for my young family. What you fail to understand is that we don't always plan for things to go wrong, and to live with "worse case scenarios" constantly on your mind is not living at all. Mr. Kim may have passed in body and mind, but his free spirit lives on in his two young children.

Honor & Respect

This is a time for positive thought. James is still sorely missed, and it's
wonderful of CNET to honor him. The school program is something he would be
proud of.

I never made an audio product purchase without checking to see if James had
reviewed it. He was a great part of the CNET team and is missed, but not
forgotten. Thanks for sharing again.
