The New England Patriots of Webcams

by Matthew Elliott

We have a winner: the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000

I tested four desktop Webcams this month and went into the reviews thinking that the differences would be slight given that the trusted Webcam isn't exactly new or cutting-edge technology. Like Tom Brady and company this year (but without the cheating), one Webcam, however, proved itself to be far superior to the rest of the competition. The Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 turned in the best image quality by far--particularly in low light--while also serving up the best software and build quality. It's like the Patriots, but with a strong running game. It's what Michael Scott might call a win-win-win.

The Creative Live Cam Optia AF isn't without its charms. It can do remote monitoring and time-lapse video, and the lens can be easily rotated--convenient for shooting objects other than yourself.

As for the other two? The Microsoft LifeCam VX-7000 and Philips SPC-900NC cams proved to be average at best.

Need a smaller Webcam for your laptop? Logitech's got a winner for you here, too, but the choice isn't as clear cut. Read my previous laptop Webcam roundup here.

What?! What heck are you talking about?
by beantowntechie November 20, 2007 9:48 AM PST
Are you serious or just looking to get some attention? First, the Pats don't cheat. I wish you moron's out there could get it straight. Did you see video? Do you know anything about Football?! And what is this about a weak running game? Let's see maybe it's because we don't need to depend on one, like uh, I don't know the Chargers...Get a freaking clue, you dbag! You California people are just pissed 'cause Brady over shadows Montana. 19-0 Pats. live it, learn it, love it.

Oh, as for this camera, since your comparison with the patriots sucks so much, this camera probably does too. God, it must be horrible to suck at everything you do.

First off the author is poking fun at a football team, not your first born. Secondly, the Pat's and Belichick weren't handed one of the biggest fines in NFL history because they played by all the rules.

Your team is doing well - enjoy it - don't berate the author for using a little timely humor in their article. Have a little more class.
Well I'm not quite as harsh as that other guy

But I do have to agree, that comparison was ridiculous. I'm not a patriots fan, I personally like the colts, but to take a cheap shot at a football team when reviewing a webcam is completly unprofessional. Even if you had excluded the "but without cheating" part, why would you ever compare a webcam to a football team? It's not funny, it just doesn't make sense. I didn't even read the review, the poor comparison is extremly discouraging.

After 5 years, Firefox faces new challenges

Mozilla helped reshape the Web since releasing Firefox 1.0 five years ago. Now it's got a reawakened Microsoft and Google Chrome to reckon with.

There's a map for that: GPS or smartphone?

Almost every handset comes with mapping software these days, but standalone GPS devices are becoming more affordable than ever.
