Turn your PC into an HDTV

Sure, you could pay iTunes two bucks for every episode of The Office you download to your PC. Or you could add a TV tuner and record unlimited shows--in high def!--free of charge. eCost has the Viore Portable HDTV Tuner for just $55, a steal at twice the price.

Just plug this USB tuner into your desktop or notebook, then connect an analog cable feed or the included ATSC antenna. The latter lets you pull down HD channels right outta thin air (provided you live in a metropolitan area).

To record shows for later viewing, you'll need Windows XP Media Center 2005, Windows Vista Premium, or Windows Vista Ultimate: Microsoft's Media Center (which is baked into those three operating systems) offers killer DVR capabilities. All you have to do is supply a tuner like this one. It even comes with a remote.

The Viore Portable HDTV Tuner for PC I purchased based on your article was to be Vista Capable. But I have talk to Viore( Distributor), newsoftinc.com ( manufacturer) and arrowmax.com (software developer) and no one has a the drivers to work on a Vista Home Premium system. If you would let me know how to get the drivers needed it would be appreciated.

Viore's little unit does NOT work under Vista. Viore has no website, so you can't ask them for a Vista compatible driver. Their software support newsoftinc.com takes no responsibility for anything other than the TV viewing software. When you run the application in XP compatibility mode it doesn't function properly, especially the channel selection feature, and the time shifting functions. So, unless you just want to watch TV and manually change channels one at a time this device is a piece of cr@p! Whoever recommended the product owes me $50.

To run in vista you must install the drivers in XP compatibility mode. I have one of these running on Vista Ultimate and another running on Vista Home Premium, and they both work perfectly with the Windows Media Center Program. I haven't tried the PVR Program they include on the CD though.

To install this under vista simply:
1. right click on the setup.exe file found on the included cd-rom,
2. click properties
3. click on the Compatibility tab
4. Check Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP
5. Click Ok
6. Double Click on the same setup.exe file that you just set for XP Compatibility

I'm a 'tech' person, but I'm sorry, this Viore product is not of any real use... period. Perhaps if you live in an area of EXTREMELY good reception, it might work. And be aware that the unit will -not- pull channels off of digital cable tv service... only analog cable. I purchased this product off eCost.com... and have tried with two computers... and also tried with the included antenna and with a larger external antenna. I could not pick up any analog channels of watchable quality. I could only pick up two digital broadcast channels out of at least a half dozen available. I have a Westinghouse 26" flat panel tv as well... (this is -not- a 'top of the line' tv, but) ...it picked up (more) channels easily. You -really- need a -roof- antenna and then you might get the digital broadcast channels in your area... but the picture quality will still not be what it should be, it seems. The little remote control is similarly of limited range. I am -severely- disappointed in this Viore product... and since it is virtually useless to me, and I don't want to foist it onto others, I expect I will just THROW IT IN THE TRASH.

I've had it working for months... and the HD picture is great. I found this post while I was searching for updated drivers & software, however.
I use GBPVR on XP media SP2 with drivers from package
GBPVR is a pain to setup but works.
The magic was "capture sources", "BDA Recording plugin",Edit, settings, and a check in the box:"only show devices installed on this machine" which found a "Pinnacle PCTV HD Pro Stick" installed!
Anyone using anything better?

Broida. Why don't you tell your readers that this crap does not work with Vista before spouting off about how great this junk is. That would be of some service to your readers.
