Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T2: Memory cards? Who needs memory cards?

Sony's newest member of the stylish Cyber-shot T-series line beckons you to leave the memory cards at home. The company just announced the Cyber-shot DSC-T2, an 8-megapixel camera with a whopping 4 gigabytes of internal memory. That's about 1,300 full-resolution photos without any external memory. Of course, if you need more space, the camera accepts Memory Stick Pro Duo cards as well.

To organize, view, and share all these pictures, the T2 features Sony's PMB Portable software to help automate the process uploading videos and pictures to commonly used media sharing sites. If you want to keep your photos on the camera, you can still view them on the T2's 2.7-inch LCD screen.

The T2 features the Cyber-shot T-series' signature sliding lens cover, giving it a stylish-but-familiar look while protecting its image-stabilized 38mm to 114mm-equivalent f/3.5-4.3 lens. The camera also includes face detection, HD component video output, and Sony's "Smile Shutter" feature that automatically snaps photos when the subject flashes a smile.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T2 ships in December, and will retail for about $350. It will be available in white, black, blue, green, and pink versions.

good question
by 1001noisycameras October 24, 2007 1:51 AM PDT
It seems manufacturers have shied away for too long from built-in memory despite the falling prices. Companies with non-standard memory card formats (eg MemoryStick, xD) have more to gain from these because people won't avoid their cameras simply because they don't want to deal with yet another format.

Some people may not be very happy that it starts at 38mm, since some of the other makers have tried 28mm with ultracompacts. But I don't think anyone has tried 28mm with a folded optics lens. Is it even optically possible at these sizes?

What's it's zoom? "38mm to 114mm" is meaningless to most people.
