USS Enterprise will take your calls

Some phone and gadget makers have understandably sought to make handsets based on Star Trek communicators, but that approach is apparently too subtle for others. Why limit yourself to a single replica, after all, when you can do the whole ship?

The "Star Trek USS Enterprise Telephone" is exactly that, a limited edition that GeekAlerts says even bears the inscription of William Shatner himself. When a call comes in, a red alert sounds and the engines light up.

It's not a mobile phone, however, so your bragging rights will be confined to your own conn. But it will look just dandy sitting next to your Phaser remote.

WHAT Communicator phones?!
by DarkHawke October 14, 2007 7:53 AM PDT
Closest I've seen to one was an abortive attempt that I don't know was ever sold. It was just a standard flip cell-phone that had a grille-like look to the lid, with the rest of the body colored black. Inside, it was just a regular phone, though it apparently had some Trek-oriented ringtones and wallpaper and was supposed to let you play some Trek games.

Me, I've been lusting for a TRUE Communicator-style cell for years, probably the only thing that'll ever get me to buy one of those damnable things. What kills me is that the tech to perfectly simulate a Communicator has existed for a number of years. Most cells are smaller than the dimensions of a Communicator and lots if not all of them have both speakerphone functions and voice dialing. All you need is an ACTUAL grille (which could also be the antenna to the device as it's supposed to be) that chirps when you flip it up and the appropriate "boop-boop-boop" chime as a ringtone and you're home!

Sad thing is, so limited a phone would never sell in today's market, except amoung the uber Trek geeks like myself. Right now, I'd be okay with a phone on which I could put the aforementioned correct ringtone, and perhaps have the activation chirp sound when I either pick up or make a call. Anyone know of a phone that'll fit this meager bill? A flip phone would be preferable, of course. Gots to live at least SOME of the dream!
