Six weeks later, still no $150 laptop

Sadly, it looks like I'm going to have to call shenanigans on the $150 Swedish laptop. When I placed my order for the Medison Celebrity laptop on July 25, the Medison Web site estimated the Linux-based laptop would ship within four to six weeks. Well, today marks six weeks, so unless I see the UPS man within the next hour or so, Medison will have failed to honor its commitment to ship me a laptop in the stated time frame. The company hasn't even bothered to inform me how much it plans to charge for shipping the laptop, let alone provide an update on when I might expect to receive it.

The laptop is sold through Columbus, Ohio-based reseller 2Checkout.com, which has been thoughtfully answering questions from understandably concerned customers who have a Medison laptop on order. A 2Checkout.com rep named Kristen has been active on a forum thread and stated in a recent post, "All customers who pre-ordered will have shipping costs identified via re-invoice and be asked to re-authorize the order." I haven't received an e-mail from 2Checkout.com since the initial confirmation of my order on July 25.

I spoke with a 2Checkout.com support person this afternoon, and she was able to tell me that my order was among the first couple hundred, which means I should be among the first to receive the laptop if and when Medison actually starts shipping the thing. (She did say Medison started shipping the laptop in Sweden--a small consolation to this U.S. laptop user.) Though helpful and knowledgeable about the situation--I wasn't the first person to call customer support about Medison--she seemed as perplexed as I did about the lack of detail Medison has provided since it announced the availability of the Celebrity laptop. Even a simple item like shipping--how much I'll be asked to pay or how the charge will be handled--has yet to be explained. I certainly want to avoid dealing directly with Medison if it involves giving the company my credit card number.

I'm going to keep my order open with the hopes that a $150 laptop shipped late is better than a $150 laptop shipped never. My credit card has not been charged, and I trust 2Checkout.com to not bill me until it has received proof--a tracking number--from Medison that my Celebrity laptop is in route. More as I know it, but as it stands now, I'm far from impressed on how Medison is doing business. If it weren't for 2Checkout.com staying on top of the situation, I would have canceled my order by now.

How about the rest of you with a Medison Celebrity laptop on order? Have you been given any indication you'll be receiving the system? Have you given up and canceled your order? Know anyone in Sweden who can prove the laptop has really started shipping?

It Will Be Really Cool.. I'm Keeping it open
by CaptainDangerHappy September 5, 2007 3:42 PM PDT
I will also keep my order open. I placed it back on July 28th. Just awaiting my e-mail confirmation to ship. If 2Checkout was not involved I would never have placed the order. The suspense is killing me!!!

I'm still in... though i am highly dubious

I believe it to be nothing more than a great way to get international publicity by offering too good to be true laptops. Of course with most things too good to be true, they aren't true.

I'm waiting for the shipping to be $100 or something ridiculous to cover their costs.

I also wonder legally if they can charge us shipping. When I ordered laptop I selected the only available shipping option and it had $0 next to it. Surely this is a contractually binding amount?

Does the Crave legal dept have any ideas about this?

How will this play out?

Assuming that this is all a sham, will the people behind this farce get arrested or something? What are the repercussions?

Just tapping my fingers waiting

I placed an order for two about 4 weeks ago. Two cheap laptops for two kids, right? I made an inquiry to 2CO last week and they had no more information, but offered to cancel the order. I told them I'd stick with it for a while longer. If we are kept waiting much longer laptops will be $100 and this won't be a bargain.

Bad omen-- Medison website is gone.
by budnews September 7, 2007 7:35 PM PDT
Clicking on your link brings up the host's home page, not the Medison website. Runaway website = company is MIA.

Matthew, you you please stop this???

Matthew, your articles concerning the Medison computer is confusing a lot of people.

What makes you think this has a chance of being real???

It actually doesn't take many minutes of research to find out how real this "deal" is.

First, the specs were copied from Clevo's web site and at US$150 there is just no way this computer can be realized; unless someone really just want to lose money.

Secondly Medison is just a one-man company run by a guy with the name Valdi with no money and no experience. It's essentially just a simple web site that now finally has been shut down.

And there are a ton of other things that could be said about this.

But it's sad to see people get misinformed in this way from C-NET that I usually respect for providing useful information.

Thank you very much!

Nothing illegal?

No one has lost any money. 2CO gets the press. I haven't seen this topic on any national TV news shows yet, but I'm sure I will. No one knows of anyone who has actually paid out any money!

Can be fraud without getting money from customers

If they make misleading claims in order to inflate their importance and perceived popularity (thousands of customers! hundreds of thousands web site visitors!)and attract advertising revenue or some other benefits.

by cellpunxer September 9, 2007 3:08 AM PDT
As most of you know "medisoncelebrity.com" is no longer up. I think this puts the final nail in the coffin! Even when no one had any info on medison (few months ago) You could basically tell by looking at there webpage it was a scam! May you suffer from a thousand plagues Valdi Ivancic.

Medison Celebrity

Hello, the website is still functioning I have it open at this moment save your nail a little while longer. I wrote the company directly and it took them about 7 days to respond. Being they don't speak English the note was a little cryptic in translation but they reassured me that as long as I got a response for 2checkout the order would be received and processed. Now I'm sure they didn't plan on the overwhelming response for orders and my just be overwhelmed. Considering we haven't been charged we are out nothing except waiting and sitting watching for this thing is not occupying all my time! I reserve judgment till at least 8 weeks have gone by considering I've waited longer for some US made goods.

Keeping the faith.

by cellpunxer September 10, 2007 8:25 PM PDT
First of all i didnt know you speak for everyone saying that no one has lost a penny.A few friend have of mine have lost more than few pennys after i bet them that this so called "laptop" would not be delivered in the time period promised. Second you say you think the company is in way over there heads and is having problems making/distributing the laptop. Why couldnt they ship.. say 50 laptops or whatever to at least show a sign to us that they mean well. They havent even issued a statement to tell anyone what the hells the hold up.

Dreams vs. reality
by peter.mortensen September 14, 2007 2:58 AM PDT
Matthew you are confusing people a lot by writing as if this Medison laptop is real business. You should know better and investigate the facts in the industry and in particular about Medison.

This US$150 Medison laptop was impossible to begin with.

Think about it, the really serious laptop computer companies are fighting a battle to reduce their BOMs with pennies to get it down to allow a price of perhaps twice of this Medison price.

We all want to dream about wonderful things happening but we also need to put realism into those dreams.

Not worried.
by ExtremeRyno September 14, 2007 1:25 PM PDT
As I said in response to your first article: My boss has ordered one. She's not worried, she knows she'll get a refund if nothing else.

Also, all these people bashing you for promoting a scam..Get over it. No one is getting scammed if they don't lose any money. I'm sure most people went into this a tad skeptical, and I'm sure a most are playing the "wait and see" game as well. It's not that big a deal.

I don't see these articles as misleading in any way shape or form. They're a chronicle of the waiting game giving others information in the off chance it isn't a joke.

If this is a joke, then Sweden has a warped sense of humor. :)

Selling something that's nothing!
by peter.mortensen September 14, 2007 7:20 PM PDT
I like the previous post of someone who reacts to this blog and creates a brand new C-NET account immediately just to add a response to make people understand they will get their money back.

Are you working for 2CO?

Fundamentally it's wrong to sell something that doesn't even exist - even if the company returns the money after some time.

Medison Shennanigans
by desertsurfergirl September 24, 2007 3:33 PM PDT
Before you call shennanigans, you should know that I wrote the company on Saturday yes Saturday the 22nd and I got a reply today, saying they are not out of business they are just swamped and overloaded with orders. They did not plan on such a good response and are currently NOT TAKING ORDERS until they get caught up.

So don't write them off just yet, but then patience is a virtue eh.

You are foolish desertsurfergirl!! You actually believe what medison tells you!! HA!! I laugh in you face!
"They did not plan on such a good response and are currently NOT TAKING ORDERS until they get caught up" Bullcrap!!
When someone says they have laptops for a $150 with the specs that they claim, How in the hell could you not expect that many orders!?!? If i went on ebay and told everyone that i was selling laptops for $150 out the door with the following specs..

# Intel® Celeron 1.5 GHz CPU
# 14" Widescreen X-bright LCD
# 256 MB Ram memory
# 40 GB Hard Drive
# 802.11g Wireless LAN

How many orders do you think i would receive?
