Apple exchanging some iPhones?

Is it bugging you?

(Credit: CNET Networks)

Apple forums are buzzing with reports from several iPhone users that their shiny new gadgets are suffering from poor call volume and dismal battery life. Indeed, CNET's own photo production manager said his iPhone, which he purchased last Friday, was plagued with such issues. Though we felt the call volume on our review iPhone was somewhat low, we haven't experienced any battery issues. In fact, we've experienced impressive battery life times in our CNET Labs tests.

So we want to know, is this happening to you? Are you experiencing dismal battery life and unacceptable call volume? We've heard from several people--our photo production manager among them--that Apple is replacing its iPhones in Apple stores. And once that's happened, most performance problems vanish. Apple tech support wouldn't confirm that an official exchange program is underway, and the company hasn't issued any service bulletins, either. So please tell us, is your iPhone giving you problems?

No problems here

The call volume on the phone is a tad low, but I can live with it. Battery life has been great for me. Here are a few things that helped:. You'll save some juice my turning off wifi and bluetooth. Another great way to save battery is to turn down the brightness of the phone. In most cases you don't need it set to the default level. Change the auto-lock setting to it's lowest level. If you don't need vibrate on, turn it off. And lastly, change your mail setting to check mail manually.

Hope this helps...

iPhone poor battery life
by kenpodude July 5, 2007 7:23 PM PDT
My iPhone goes through 60% of its battery within 15 hours. Thats about 1 hour of talk and 1 hour of internet and maybe 1 hour of music. I need to charge every night and I'm concerned that the non-replacable battery won't last very long at this rate. Anyone else experiencing short battery life?

Few problems and very happy...

Call volume for me is decent but could be a tad better. I've noticed a tin-like
sound from callers if anything.

I experienced poor battery life on one of the first days I used it and
discovered it
was because I left WiFi on and it was trying to connect to an open WiFi signal
that required you to pay. Since then I only turn on WiFi when I know there is a
signal that I want to access rather then the iPhone always searching. A big
battery saver.

I pretty happy with my iPhone

so far so good

I've not had any issues with battery life in my first few days of use. Call volume is a little lower than my old phone was, but not unbearable except in really noisy environments (like on a busy city street.)

I find it's easier to make a call with the earbuds than through the slightly uncomfortable handset anyway (makes my ear hurt a little.) It also makes it easier to do things like check your appointment calendar while in the middle of a call anyway.

My iPhone was exchanged
by RyanFavre July 5, 2007 7:58 PM PDT
I bought an iphone on launch day at an att store. At first everything worked fine but eventually safari was constantly crashing and then other apps were constantly crashing as well. Then the iphone rebooted and I got an error screen (yellow yield sign with an "!" in it) and underneath it said "connect to itunes". I did and itunes said my iphone was in recovery mode and had to be restored. After about 5 tries (4 times the restore failed via error) the iphone restored but the apps still crashed and all my contacts were gone.

I went to the apple store the next day and the "apple genius" there told me any problems a customer was having with the iphone that couldn't be fixed with a restore were given new iphones. The reason he gave was that the product was so new that training on how to fix the iphone hasn't been done yet.

So no battery life or sound issues for me, but i can confirm apple is exchanging iphones with issues.

Also, my new iphone is working great and the apple employees were very helpful.

My iPhone ten character minimum?
by BdeRWest July 5, 2007 8:37 PM PDT
Mine's working OK. There's this weird quasi-dead-pixel-looking spot that I
swear is under the glass but above the LCD... Also anyone else's battery take
FOREVER to charge the last 10 percent or so?

Slow charging battery?
by comdevinc July 6, 2007 7:21 AM PDT
I love my iPhone. I'm very pleased with it overall, and outside of a short list of software complaints, I really only have two hardware complaints:

1) My battery, too, seems to take a LONG time to charge the last 10%.

2) The speaker is barely loud enough to hear my phone ringing in a moderately noisy environment. I wish that music came through more clearly, too, but it's often distorted. I'm sure I could fix this with some EQ settings in iTunes, but should that really be necessary?

In any case, it doesn't sound too bad considering its size, but I do wish it were a little louder.
Volume is an issue
by ah82 July 5, 2007 11:17 PM PDT
I returned my i-phone because I found the call volume too low, the speaker
phone is useless. If I cannot use it as a phone, I don't want it! I have an i-pod
and an apple lap top! The phone functions have to work rock soild!!! Therefore
before I go and buy it again, the volume levels have to be fixed....

My iPhone has been perfect!
by infinitespecter July 6, 2007 3:29 AM PDT
As others mentioned, the call volume is a little lower than I'd like, but it's still
acceptable. Speakerphone volume needs a big boost though. As far as battery
life, I guess I got really lucky. I bought mine at 11PM on Friday and used it until
the initial charge that it shipped with ran out at about 3AM to web browse over
Wifi and make calls. I charged it overnight, then with about four hours of calls,
several hours of music and wifi browsing, and watching an episode of Ugly Betty,
it lasted until Sunday night (even then I had 20% left). I seem to be charging it
every other night at this point, with medium-heavy usage.

Iphone Freezes After coming out of sleep mode
by alexdesigns July 6, 2007 8:10 AM PDT
I had a bunch of problems with my iPhone freezing up. It was mainly when I would either take it off of the charger or take it out of sleep mode. The slider to unlock it will not slide and it will not turn off. The only way to fix it is to reset the phone. It became so annoying I returned it and got a new one. the first apple store in Galleria Mall in Florida. The manager was a real. Bad customer service in that one. So I went to aventura, they were real nice and helped me exchange it. Now everything is wonderful. Ummmm. The volume should be louder on the phone.

iPhone works mostly as advertised, want v1.1
by kswa1987 July 6, 2007 10:53 AM PDT
fantastic battery life first off. Everyone of course has asked me to see it non
stop since June 29th, and it has stood up well to it. What I'm really waiting
for are fixes for the quirky and unfinished portions of the software. Where is
the dictionary.com widget? Why does flipping the phone into coverflow take
you out of a playlist into album sorting? Why is there no custom ringers?
Why can't I change the text email and voicemail alerts? Other than those
gripes i can say the iphone is all but perfect in a mobile device.

My own iphone surprises
by gadget_crazy July 6, 2007 11:25 AM PDT
Well overall I love my iphone but I do have some hiccups. Call volume is one. Its low enough sometimes that I have to always use speaker. Now that I have my bluetooth headset, I have resolved that issue. Today I had a very strange thing happen to my iphone. My wife was listening to Akon's "Smack that" song and then she stopped the song and just turned off the phone. I turned it on and my initial screen that shows the date/time now showed time and below that "Smack that" text. I turned it off and on and it was still there. So I went to my ipod and played another song and then came out of ipod. Then turned off and on and bam,it worked. No idea what happened.

i have no idea if you people have bad hearing or what? how loud do you want it deafening? The volume on mine is just fine. I work in a LOUD factory and i can talk on the phone and hear fine with the back ground noise. I have not noticed any battery life problems either. I have to charge it about every other day

CONS: EDGE, call volume, speaker volume, etc.
by Keeglings July 6, 2007 2:08 PM PDT
I bought my iPhone at 6:40 PM on Friday after waiting in line for over 9 hours (that's nothing compared to others) and now I wish that I had waited for the next version of iPhone. Although it is a cool cell phone with lots neat new features that my old Treo 650 didn't have, there are a lot of things that I took for granted with the Treo, and that I now miss.

Below is a list of why I am not crazy about the iPhone.

1) KEYBOARD: Steve Jobs said, "give it a week and you'll be typing just as fast as before". Wrong!. I don't even have big fingers and I still hit the wrong letter when I write messages. Also, the corrections aren't much help. Sure they work sometimes, but most of the time it just annoys you by placing the wrong word.

2) EMAIL: On my Treo, I could send an email with multiple attachments (up to ten pictures). With the iPhone, you can only send one picture per email (unless I haven't found the invisible button to send more than one).

3) VOLUME: I am 24 years old, and my hearing is not going bad, but trying to hold a conversation by holding the iPhone to my ear makes me feel like I am going deaf! The speaker on my phone isn't much better. The good thing is that included in the box is pair of earphones that have really great sound quality, but who wants to put on earphones every time you want to make a call.

4) PHANTOM HOME BUTTON: This has happened to me 5 times in the last week. I will be on Google maps, and in the middle of a search, the screen with go to the home screen without touching the home button. Must be a ghost!

5) PLASTIC SCREEN PROTECTORS: I need one, and none of the Apple stores in my area (Palo Alto, Stanford, Valley Fair, Oakridge) have them!

6) EDGE SUCKS: When you are on the go, finding a Wi-Fi hotspot without password protection can be a little hard. Relying on the EDGE network can make you want to cancel your service, pay the fees and go back to a Treo.

Hopefully, the people at Apple are working to fix these problems, because the test engineers sure didn't fix of these problems before 6/29/07!

thought i was going crazy
by jakgumbo July 6, 2007 8:21 PM PDT
glad to "hear" that there are others having issue with call volume.

I find that both putting the phone to my ear and enabling speakerphone i cannot hear hardly anything. at first i thought i was doing something wrong but, i checked all the settings, made sure volume was at max. anyone know if you can take it back to an apple store or if you have to go through hell to get it replaced?

Battery problem?
by snchpnz July 6, 2007 10:37 PM PDT
Well I have to charge my iphone every night. I always get that 15% battery life message. I don't really know if the battery is draining too fast or if I'm just overusing the phone. I spend 3 or 4 hours a day messing around with my phone and watching videos. I unplug my phone from the charger at 9 in the morning and it lasts me until about 11 at night. I turn off Wi-Fi while I'm at work and turn it on at home to watch youtube videos or browse the internet while I play music. (That is probably the reason it drains so fast.) During the day I only talk about 20 minutes and I send a couple of text messages and check my email. I also think the call volume is somewhat low but I don't know if its just me. I work at a print shop and the machines are extremely loud so that could be the problem although on my old cellphone I could hear people fine. Theres probably nothing wrong with the phone just that it has really crappy volume.

program stopping
by med_pgh July 7, 2007 3:07 PM PDT
something happened to my iphone last night. I was listening to the ipod, then
suddenly the program would close and go to the main menu. That happened 4x
after I kept restarting the ipod. However when I turned off the iphone and turned
it back on, it was working smoothly again. Anyone having the same problems?

Some problems that need correcting
by irv3ro July 8, 2007 7:02 AM PDT
Once photos have been downloaded from "My Photos" there is no way to erase them from the I phone. That's a problem that needs correcting. The phone gets very hot with continued use. The most annoying feature is the AT&T internet. It's so slow. AT&T must speed things up to get high quality internet use. No one knew how to move contacts from my old phone to the I Phone. Ring volume is lower than I'm used to when compared to my old cell phone. Otherwise every other feature is working well on the most unique product I've seen in a long while.

Mine had a DOA Speaker
by minimalist July 8, 2007 9:24 AM PDT
Aggravating since I was missing calls left and right not being able to hear the
ring tones or any sounds.

AT&T was no help whatsoever (of course).

Apple was polite and helpful but there was a mixup and it took about a 7
days of back and forth to get my exchanged phone instead of the original
estimate of 2 days. In spite of the mixup apple was very professional and
courteous making multiple followup calls to make sure I had received the
phone and all was OK.

The quality of the customer service made up for the lemon I got.

New problem(temporary I hope) with browser
by gadget_crazy July 8, 2007 9:42 AM PDT
All of a sudden, yesterday whenever I go to a site the browser closes automatically even before the full site finished loading. It didn't happen to apple.com but it happened to other sites like news.yahoo.com, pgatour.com etc. I know there is issue with flash sites but I don't think there is any flash in yahoo news site. Does anyone else experience this issue?

Return to Main Menu
by surfnturf57 November 11, 2007 10:05 PM PST
I have experienced many instances where the Safari Browser returns to the main menu while browsing without any user input. This is especially annoying when you have to log onto a website to gain access. When returning to the browser, re-log-in is required.

If Apple is providing a viable web browser via the iphone/safari as claimed, this MUST be fixed as well as supporting ANY web content, especially FLASH and JAVA.
