Blue Raven PSP Extended Battery

15 more hours of playtime--but 5 more ounces of weight

Need that next on-the-go gaming session to go all night? The new Extended PSP Battery from Blue Raven Technology may be your dream product. The snap-on, lithium-polymer, 4,500mAh battery pack aims to deliver as much as 15 hours of PSP playtime--a big step up from the 3 to 5 hours offered by the PSP's default battery. But the increased playtime comes at a cost: The Extended PSP Battery is about the same size and weight as the PSP itself (5 ounces for the battery vs. 6.2 for the PSP), and it costs a whopping $90. On the bright side, it uses the PSP's charger to juice up, so you won't have to lug another wall wart around.

We'll have a complete review in May, but the added weight--and weighty price tag--means this one is strictly for hardcore PSP devotees. That said, for anyone who's ever done one of those long-haul continent-hopping flights--New York to Dubai, San Francisco to Tokyo--having the option of tripling your in-flight time on Killzone: Liberation, SOCOM, or Metal Gear Solid certainly has its appeal.

Update: Blue Raven has followed up with a note that the MSRP for the Extended Battery is $100--although it can already be found online for under $75.

Does anyone even bother with the PSP anymore?
by make_or_break April 29, 2007 11:38 PM PDT
Just wondering...

Considering how little I use my PSP these days, and how seldom anyone I know who has one uses their units, will anyone really NEED more power? ESPECIALLY for another 90 bucks?

Sounds like typical Sony arrogance again...thinking WHATEVER they come up is worth the premium.

Never thought the DS/DS Lite would whip this sucker, but even I'm convinced despite all of the kiddie games titles that dominate Nintendo's system.

who uses psp? look simple- get underground firmware for your psp. lookup "dark alex" custom firmware on google. i use 3.10oe custome firmware- 3gp converter changes any video stream to psp format- so u can watch any video u feel like on your mem stick, oe310 allows u to play games off your mem stick get iso compressor (backup isos....), ebooks- use pec (psp ebook creator)... look up pspupdates.com and stop whining about how bad psp is---- u are too dumb to realize psp is a miniature powerful laptop that fits in your pocket... i dumped my thumbdrives and blackberry -since i can get my email and surf with my psp- not to mention watch my music videos... if you don't want your psp- please sell it to me- since u find it useless..

Sony's arrogance?
by fujii13 April 30, 2007 6:29 AM PDT
Sure, Sony's got balls for forcing BluRay down people's throat, but arrogance? Do you even know what you're talking about? This product isn't even being offered by Sony, it's from Blue Raven Technology. Even if Sony is so "arrogant", even after the DRM scandal of last year, and the bulging, exploding batteries, Sony is still US's number one trusted brand:

Also, comparing the PSP to the DS is like comparing the Leapfrog Disney Princess Laptop to an Alienware Aurora, sure, they're both laptops, but ones "fun" and meant for kids, and the other's a HELL of a lot more powerful. (Oh, what do you know, the same can be said about the comparison to the Wii and the PS3!)
