Apple issues fix for notebook battery issues

Apple is advising all owners of MacBooks or MacBook Pros bought after February 2006 to download a software update that will help fix some battery issues.

The update, available through Software Update in the Apple menu or here on Apple's site, was released to correct some battery performance problems, such as shorter than usual battery life or problems charging the battery, according to a Web page on the support section of Apple's site.

But if that fix doesn't work, notebook users should contact Apple to have their battery replaced if they notice the following symptoms, cut and pasted from Apple's support document:

• Battery is not recognized causing an "X" to appear in the battery icon in the Finder menu bar.
• Battery will not charge when computer is plugged into AC power.
• Battery exhibits low charge capacity/runtime when using a fully charged battery with a battery cycle count (as shown in System Profiler) of less than 300.
• Battery pack is visibly deformed.

Apple says these problems aren't safety issues, just performance-related, a relief for those who remember the massive battery recall of last summer. Apple had to recall 1.8 million batteries manufactured by Sony as part of a larger recall that affected just about everyone in the PC industry.

Battery issues

17" Macbook pro battery warped. Last time I moved the laptop was about 15 days ago. I use it as a normal computer and when I did it warped. They only fixed it because I had the apple protection plan. Nonsense if you ask me, but they shipped it overnight which is the plus. You of course need to ship it back or they charge your credit card about 200 for a battery replacement. I made sure I sent that bad boy back the same day. DHL scheduled a pickup and it was easy.<br /><br />In the long run I was happy with Apples response but I think if you spend a lot of $$ on their product they should guarantee the batteries if they have had a recall on the 15"<br /><br />My 2cents.

Apple

As much as I love Apple and their products.. Within the last couple of years I've noticed a growing number of faults (all be it somewhat minor in comparison to others) developing with Macs, both soft and hardware. Is this something to do with a stepped up production rate or cost cutting or anything? I'm still clinging to the hope they're just minor accidents. I need reassurance the quality isn't dropping :)

Apple quality issues?

Maybe our expectations are set too high, but I, too, feel that I am <br />experiencing more and more problems. I own 6 Mac computers (2 <br />G4 12 Powerbooks, G4 15 Powerbook, Intel 20" iMac, Intel core duo <br />Mini, and a G5 tower), 5 iPods (60G photo, 60G and 80G Video, 4 <br />G Nano and 8G Nano), an appleTV and an Airport Extreme and <br />every single one has had software and or hardware issues on a <br />regular basis in the last twelve months. My Dell and Sony laptops <br />have been even worse so I don't complain about the Apple products <br />too much, but I am worried that quality is getting worse.
