Fujitsu UMPC prototype

That Fujitsu looks familiar...

(Credit: UMPC Portal)

It's UMPC day at the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing, and Intel offered plenty of examples of devices that would be built on the just-announced Ultra Mobile Platform 2007. The Fujitsu pictured here, spotted on UMPC Portal, particularly caught our attention: it looks like a consumer-electronics version of the LifeBook P1610 tablet, which has long been a niche product marketed to business travelers. It begs the question: will UMPCs ever move into the mainstream?

To help answer that question, check out our full slide show of prototypes (assembled by CNET News.com's man on the scene, Tom Krazit), and let me know if you crave any of these devices.

Michelle Thatcher has been reviewing technology products for nearly a decade. Her current focus is laptop reviews, with some kitchen gadgetry and Web 2.0 thrown in for good measure.

I want this UMPC!!
by myth90045 April 18, 2007 2:54 PM PDT
I wouldnt mind sporting this UMPC...but my opinion on the question posed, will UMPC's ever go mainstream? I am not sure. if there is a big enough need for them then yes. Look at the tablet pc. How many people do you know own one of these or the conversion types. If the UMPCS are going to take off in the mainstream arena, they will have to provide one hell of a good use for users to want to go out and use these as opposed to their laptops.

Is Cnet going to the dogs?
by Hobster April 20, 2007 1:26 AM PDT
What a crappy site! I open the page to the UMPC news @ IDF and get a video playing what I suppose is some relevant content. Instead, it's an ad for Apple that's not apparent until its conclusion. Way to go!
