$600 for a laser pointer because it's blue?

by Mike Yamamoto
(Credit: Vavolo)

Being of a blatantly superficial nature, we're fond of gadgets that come in a variety of colors. Even laser pointers, as we noted with a recent one in green.

But there is a limit to our chromatic fetish, especially where our wallet is concerned--even if it does involve a blue laser. China's Vavolo says its "PowerMaster 5mw Blue Beam Laser Pointer" is much brighter than green counterparts with the same power output.

That's great, but wait till you see the price: $600. (And that's discounted from the original $800.) For that kind of money, red looks just fine.

That price is better than thinkgeeks $1000 blue laser. but i'll wait for the price to come down. I like my green laser. it fun to point at things and actually view the line from the pointer to the end.

That wimpy 5mw is nothing. Wicked Laser's http://www.wickedlasers.com
Spyder II GX
with 200-300mw it will melt plastic and start fires
But its so not worth it with a $2000 price tag when you got $1 lighters.

Build a laser instead for cheaper

Instead of buying a expensive laser from one of the vendors. You could always just build a laser using a dvd buring laser, a $5 laser module and a minimag flashlight, its pretty good for a price around $45 considering you can burn stuff. check out www.kipkay.com, for a bunch of tutorails to do random fun stuff.
