Best Buy finagles exclusive with Apple TV

The blue-shirted ones scored a mini coup this week.

Best Buy said today that the just-released Apple TV will be available in all 822 of its U.S. stores starting Tuesday. That's two weeks ahead of all other retailers that are not named the Apple Store.

Granted, the set-top box will be available in limited supply at first. The initial shipment will be 3,000 units, which spread across more than 800 stores means there will be about five Apple TVs available at each store for the MSRP of $299.

Though there aren't many other consumer electronics stores that sell Mac computers, this does give Best Buy an advantage over the numerous outlets that carry iPods. Apple TV, a home-networking device that connects the PC and TV, falls somewhere in between computing and portable media. This is the first time Best Buy is selling Apple products besides iPods and computers.

Update: Best Buy on Thursday retracted its claim of having a two-week head start on other retailers. See the updated Crave post.

Why would I buy this box?
by nelsonmadison March 21, 2007 8:22 PM PDT
I don?t understand what all the fuss is about. I download movies from all the studios onto my ZEN from Walmart.com or Unbox.com and if I want, plug it into my TV to watch DVD quality movies. However, it also fits in my pocket, so I can take it with me and wach while I?m on the train or waiting in line. What am I missing here? Only Disney movies are on iTunes.

This box lets you skip the 'download to the iPod/Zen' step. Plus, it isn't just for
movies. You can access music and photos stored on multiple computers,
Windows or Mac.

It's not just for movies purchased from iTunes either. I have a whole slew of
interesting videos encoded in mpeg-4 that can be viewed on any television in
the house. No longer do we have to crowd around in front of the (relatively) tiny
computer monitor to watch them.
