Your face is your password

Gone may be the days of remembering passwords or scanning your fingerprint to log on to your PC. If NecSoft's new authentication software catches on, all you'll need is your face.

Say cheese! Or a random combination of
numbers and letters!

(Credit: Akihabara News)

The NecSoft BiodeLogon system uses a Webcam to take your mugshot, then matches it up to your assigned user photo. If it's a match, you're logged in. So if you need to change your password, just get a haircut or pierce your nose.

Sounds easy...maybe too easy. If you have an identical twin, can they access your PC? What if you're just not feeling like yourself that day? If the Caps Lock is on when BiodeLogon scans your mug, is the all-caps version of your face the same as your normal face?

Actually, it doesn't really matter. Face passwords are the coolest.

What if you put a picture of yourself up to the camera. What would happen then?

You will be logged in,
but there are a number of ways passwords can be stolen
i think it as easy as stole your photo

For example passwords can be stolen if the computer is stolen,
or if the computer is accessed by someone while you are absent,
or somebody can see keyboard keys while you typing password

so ... security of face logon is comparable with password logon, I like to use Rohos Face Logon http://www.rohos.com/products/rohos-face-logon/
Remember the Mr. Bean movie?
by christine1012 February 5, 2007 8:24 PM PST
That's right, the Mr. Bean movie which I admit I saw 3 times at the cinema because I had that much spare time and I didn't have to pay for it. I digress. The part where he's at the airport and the police look at his passport photo and he's making that awful scrunched up face. That's how that face password thing should work. There are my 2 cents.

Pictures would be a problem
by Leria February 7, 2007 1:26 AM PST
That would be a problem with photo recognition and face recognition software. They would have to tell that eyeballs and such were not moving and reacting in a real-life way, so that was not a real person there.

Even then, someone could hold a videotape of you talking with it zoomed up close on your face, and use it to get past this stuff.

A better system would be multi-pronged: face recognition, voice recognition, a spoken password, and a typed password.

Though how many average people are going to use that, is a question I cannot answer.
Already tried it out...

I can't remember the name of the program, but it came bundled with some software for something new I bought for my computer (DVD-rom or video card). At any rate, it took a couple of different pictures of me in different light sources and then, when I tried to log in to windows to see if it'd work I got locked out. Stupid thing didn't recognize me! Good thing I had enabled the hotkey backup. Uninstalled that sucker immediately after.....I'll wait for a good 'ol retina scanner thank you!

actually I like the fingerprint method; it's simple, you generally always have your fingers with you, and you don't have to take off your glasses, or put them on to match a face photo.

Absolutely

What a nightmare remembering all those passwords. I find myself using the same password over and over and that is not a good thing to do.

Face as a password

New technology. Would wait awhile. Using Robo Form allows random good passwords that are stored and signing on is a snap.

so many foreseeable problems
by bkonicek February 7, 2007 11:28 AM PST
In the post you said that if you want to change your password get a haircut. What are you supposed to do if you get a haircut and don't change your password? Would you get locked out of your computer because you look a little different? I can see so many problems with logging in. got a black eye? sorry you're not allowed to use your computer. Put on makeup before going out? Sorry you'll have to wash it off before using your computer

"Would you buy into it?" Not just NO!!!!!...but
by btljooz February 7, 2007 12:01 PM PST
7734 NO!!!!!!!

There are way too many reasons to list here why NOT to trust such a program such as this. Not the least of which, is the way this can be (and most likely WILL someday be) exploited by Big Brother. THINK about THAT one! That's in addition to all the other reasons/questions raised before this particular post.

PEOPLE, STOP having a LAZY attitude and wanting the easy way out of everything. There are way too many other options to keeping/recalling your passwords IF you actually USE your mind/IQ/ immagination to come up with simple ways to manage your passwords.

ANY computer program that is designed to help you manage passwords CAN be breached and/or abused. THINK about that...............

Don't think something that is seemingly innocent can't be abused? READ THIS:

SCAM! FACES for Record keeping!
by Gobby Hilda February 7, 2007 3:11 PM PST
It is possible to keep ALL User' faces on records.
It is just a matter of software to weed out criminals.
The question is: who is a criminal?
Same thing with fingerprint readers; they have yours on record now...
