A Sacramento, Calif., radio station has fired 10 employees after a woman died in a water-drinking contest to win a Nintendo Wii, the Associated Press and other media sources are reporting.

A preliminary autopsy indicated that Jennifer Strange, 28, died from water intoxication after participating in KDND-FM 107.9's on-air "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest Friday. The participant who drank the most water without using the bathroom was promised a game console valued at $250.

During the match, contestants were given two minutes to drink an 8-ounce bottle of water, then given another bottle to drink after a 10-minute break.

After drinking two gallons and becoming one of two final participants, according to witness reports, Strange began to feel ill and had to quit. She called in sick to work after the contest, complaining of a bad headache, and about five hours later, her mother found her dead in her Rancho Cordova, Calif., home.

An excess of water in the body can lead to the dilution of vital fluids. That in turn can lead to swelling of the brain, seizures, comas and in some cases death.

John Geary, vice president and general manager of Entercom/Sacramento, the parent company of KDND, sent an e-mail to reporters Tuesday stating that "effective immediately, the 'Morning Rave' program is canceled and 10 employees are no longer with the station."

Among the fired employees were three morning disc jockeys.

Strange, a mother of three, took part in the contest hoping to win the system for her children, according to reports.

DHMO exposure can be deadly
by eagle33199 January 18, 2007 9:22 AM PST
Unfortunately, the toxic side effects of DHMO (dihydrogen Monoxide) exposure have been swept under the rug by mainstream media...

Dihydrogen monoxide is just another name for water, think about it. Two hydrogens and one oxygen, H2O, you dont have to be a chemist to figure that one out. You actually believe that website???? You have to be kidding me. Water is probably the furthest thing from a poison to the body, it is the most essential nutrient. The website is just a hoax and has been documented elsewhere. If you believe that site then you are a retard.

The entire website is based on a science project that a 14 year old did in 1997. The project was titled "How Gullible Are We". This entire website is a hoax. Of course most of the information is true, he's talking about WATER!!! The "award-winning U.S. scientist" that did some of the "research" is Nathan Zohner. That is the name of the 14 year old junior high student. It really is sad how gullible people are and how they dont check out the resources before believing them. Just check out this website.

An Ignorant with Iniciative...

The Dj's shouldn't only be fired but go to jail too. Ignorance is not an excuse when playing with people lives. They should have asked a cunsultant or a doctor wnen they decided to give something to ingest to those people. Is just common sence. Anyone with a common Knowledge of human physiology knows that extreme cumsumption of water in a short period of time can cause renal failure an death. Why didn't anyone asked??? It's a shame that this mayor radio and tv networks hire this many dumb people and give them so much power through the corresponding channels. WoW!!!

what are you talking about?

Yeah Lets blame everyone one else. Your joking me right
Come on, He made her drink a lot of water, She died from drinking a lot of water. How many people do you know that has died from drinking too much water? HMMMM Me Nobody!! It was a freak accident I'm sure the guy feels bad enough for killing her and now you want to send him to jail. Your a prick ! It's like if I made some eat alot of Burgerking and they died you would want to send me to jail. Get the hell out of here ....
The guy lost his Job for doing a bit The reason they fired him so the family wouldn't sue the company which I'm sure they will anyways, because Us Americans are sue happy.
So quick to sue people. It's sad I know damm! It's a tragedy
The lady did it, she knew, she is dead! Now get over it!

It's people like you that start stupid rules like: If I'm a bartender and I serve someone to much alcohol and they leave my bar and they go and kill someone it's my fault.
Our Jails are way to packed right now for sending some guy to jail that did a Radio bit. Jails are for murders, rapist, Child molesters ,Ect.... Not for a Radio Jocky that does a bit and accidentally kills someone by making them drink to much water. I'm 15 years old and I know what's right and wrong better then you. I thought it was you get wiser with age.
You are totally INCORRECT!

Maybe you should check your basic understanding of human physiology... Drinking too much water doesn't cause you to go into renal failure, and certainly wasn't the cause of this woman't death. Drinking too much water causes a hyperdilution of the serum, effectively decreasing the osmolarity, causing an influx of water into cells, causing them to swell. This is most dangerous in the brain if it occurs too quickly (the brain usually is able to compensate fairly effectively and to a point if this occurs over a longer period of time). As a result, and in simple terms, this woman's brain swelled up causing her neurological symptoms and eventually became comatose and died. So... there you go.

I agree, anyone with common knowledge of human phys would know this, and it's ashame people know more about their car than their own bodies. However, I don't think the DJ's are to blame. The woman was ignorant and she consented. If a woman have Consensual unprotected sex with a man who had HIV yet was Ignorant of the fact and she becomes infected should the man be sent to jail? According to your logic he should.
DJ's Deserve Mercy

Literally no one in the United States outside of the medicalprofession would have ever -- ever! -- considered drinking water "dangerous."

So here we have everyon eand their mother screaming that the DJ's should have "known" that drinking water was an inherently dangerous act.

How many radio station lawyers were fired who personally approved this?

How many radio managers were fired who approved this stunt?

Why isn't anyone screaming the mother who died was "stpuid" for not knowing you could die from drinking water?

C'mon. NO ONE thought it was possible to die from drinking a lot of water.

Everyone who is now acting holier-than-thou needs to stop pretending like they would have known better. You wouldn't have. So just stop.

Why is it the dj's fault?
by Mainframe January 18, 2007 5:19 PM PST
....i dont get why the dj's are the one that have gotten axed unless they did this project on their own without approval.
surely it had to be approved by somone further up ion the company that ultimately made the decision to go forward with it.

because they took part in something their company was telling them to do they get the sack?
very unfair in my opinion

yes it was stupid, yes it should have been passed by a medical professional before being approved - but ultimately i dont think it was the dj's responsible.

corperate ********.

Has happened before

The DJs should have been aware of water poisoning. I've heard of college students dying from drinking as much as 4 gallons of water (albeit they were being hazed to join a fraternity) and dying. Instead of focusing on how to market their show better, the station should have done more research.

Look for a transcript or sound clip

Find a transcript or sound clip of the broadcast to see what the on-air talent knew as the contest was in progress.

DJs knew about the dangers of water intoxication
by thisislovell January 21, 2007 11:03 AM PST
There have been radio clips found with the DJs talking about the possibly of water intoxication. Someone even called to warn them, and they dismissed her, saying that they weren't responsible because the contestants signed waivers. Irresponsible, yes, illegal, I don't know.
