Where are all the Wiis?

Well, it's been a nice couple of months since the launch of the Nintendo Wii and the PlayStation 3. After the predictably massive crowds and instant sell-outs of the systems on launch day, stores have had plenty of time to restock and get the new next-gen systems back on their shelves. Unfortunately, that hasn't quite been the case.

The Nintendo Wii is still almost impossible to find, and this is a surprising frustration for guys like me who decided not to wait in line for hours to get one at launch. After some legwork and a number of phone calls, I've determined that there isn't a Nintendo Wii on sale in Manhattan. At least, there aren't any Wiis for sale in Manhattan in the big-name stores such as GameStop and Best Buy. There might be some smaller, disreputable boutiques with Wiis in the back sold at high markup, but I want to buy my console for retail price from a store that's on the up-and-up.

iTrackr is a Web site that tracks different stores' inventories for big-name items. According to their site, only 7 out of 62 listed stores in New York City have Nintendo Wiis in stock, and none of them are in Manhattan. This Wii shortage is somewhat surprising, but not as surprising as the other thing I found in my search: many stores have PS3s on hand.

According to iTrackr, 30 of the 62 stores listed in NYC have PlayStation 3s in stock, including the GameStops I frequent at Union Square and the Manhattan Mall at 33rd and Broadway. I checked other areas on iTrackr to see if this trend followed. In Los Angeles, 4 out of 42 stores have Wiis in stock, while 12 have PS3s. In San Francisco, 5 out of 19 stores have PS3s, and none have any Wiis. The Wii is also sold out in Fort Worth, Texas, where 17 out of 18 stores have PS3s in stock. Even in my rural hometown of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, neither of the GameStops/Electronics Boutiques near town have Wiis, while both have PS3s.

OK, this is just one aggregation site, and it's not very scientific or statistically sound way to determine product availability. Still, it's a strange trend to witness. But even on CNET, two merchants are carrying PlayStation 3s (albeit at high markups over retail), but none have any Wiis.

If I was trying to get a PlayStation 3, this would be great news. Unfortunately, I want to get my Zelda on, and I really don't want to schlep out to Queens, NY to do so.

Couldn't agree more.
by tpeterson4444 January 17, 2007 12:32 PM PST
I too, have been waiting to pick up a Wii. I laughed at my neighbors that got in line at Target at 4am the morning they came out, thinking that I would snatch one up shortly after the first of the year. Right! I've been checking GameStop, BestBuy and other big box shops here in the northern suburbs of Chicago, and nothing doing. They are telling me maybe towards the end of Feb!!!! I might have to just wait now until the Wii's come out in cool colors.

It seems like a real trend...
by eagle33199 January 17, 2007 1:20 PM PST
Not only does it show most areas have next to no Wii's and tons of PS3's, but it also shows that users of the site are currently tracking the Wii more than they are the PS3.

Does anyone have any numbers regarding current production numbers?

More Wii at Best Buy on 1/28
by wishiels January 17, 2007 1:43 PM PST
Rumor has it that Best Buy stores will be receiving shipments of 15 - 20 Wii each on Sunday 1/28. I won't be holding my breath or waiting outside in 10 degree temps to find out.

Best Buy holding Wiis until February
by therearenorules January 19, 2007 4:14 AM PST
I've heard from a reputable source that Best Buy gets shipments every couple of
weeks, but they're holding them until February. There could be hundreds of Wiis
in the backroom of every Best Buy.
It's as crazy as on release day!

I was told by my local Gamestop manager that people are lining up outside the store every weekday just in case they get a delivery of Wii. EVERY DAY. The Wii will remain unavailable for months unless there is a serious uptick in production. One of my colleagues had a fit today after calling every store in the area...one got the Wii in this morning and sold out instantly. He is toying with the idea of buying one from Ebay at the elevated prices. I will not do that. I will wait. Maybe until September.

Here's a funny, Shakespearean column about someone hunting for the Wii. Not too shabby.

STOLEN!!! that's were they are......
by pmrodz January 18, 2007 9:10 AM PST
My son who was here on leave (at Christmas time) before his third round in Iraq, spent a whole day driving around looking for a Wii. Finally he noticed the UPS truck arriving at the ToysRUs store and ask what the delivery was. Yes!!! 9 Wii's ready for the taking. He was so happy and I was just as happy for him. I even join him and play for two days with him. Time to get back to Germany were he is stationed. Continental taged the suitcases with priority handling, a courtesy to our military guys. Well guess what? everything made it but his Wii and games. Suitcase open and items stolen by the bagage handlers at Newark Airport. Poor guy, he is so upset, not only does he get robed, Continental will not take any responsibility and reimburse the money. We were to naive in thinking that the airport has honest people working there, so much for airport security and because the thiefs know they can get away with it, nothing will stop them. Not until the airlines are made responsible and feel it in their pockets. Unfortunately, he will leave for Iraq without his new Wii, one of the few things that would have kept his mind off the horrible things he has to see every day.

It's Newark "America's Armpit" NJ...
by PhillyBoy919 January 19, 2007 7:50 AM PST
...what do you expect? You have to pack that kind of thing in its own wrapping and preferably in a locking suitcase. Many of these airport workers don't think twice about stealing from a suitcase, but to do so to one of our servicemen is reprehensible!

Your son is a hero and he certainly didn't deserve that. Shame on the airline for not taking responsibility!

No Wiis in Sonoma County CA either
by radiationman January 18, 2007 11:42 AM PST
I've been watching up by me for the last two weeks... No Wiis in Sonoma County since New Years... The impression I'm getting is that nobody's expecting more until February...

And I though Ninetendo had the supply chain figured out when they launched unlike Sony and Microsoft.

But I agree, I'm not paying more than retail for a Wii... If that means I have to wait to get one, I'm ok with that...

Weird wild stuff
by matwiow January 18, 2007 1:07 PM PST
I wonder if it has anything to do with all the publicity stating that PS3's were going to be impossible to get a hold of so people don't even ask for them. Up here in Rhode Island, I happened to be in a Stupor Mal-Wart where they had a couple of PS3s. I think people thought they were displays so they didn't even get them. And make the schlep out to Queens. Mass transit is the way.

Bloomsburg overflowing with PS3's
by LenSp January 18, 2007 8:18 PM PST
That's funny. I was in Bloomsburg this past weekend and saw that the WalMart also had several PS3's available. No sign of any Wii's.

PS3s plentiful in Philly, no Wiis around...
by PhillyBoy919 January 19, 2007 7:54 AM PST
I have seen PS3s at Best Buy, Circuit City, and CompUSA in the Philly area over the past couple weeks, but not a single Wii system.

Almost all of the gamers I know have an Xbox 360 and have shown little interest in either the PS3 or Wii.

No Wii's in Knoxville
by ursula66 January 19, 2007 8:42 AM PST
We bought a ps3 before christmas and my kids got that from Santa. After the holidays we decided we wanted a wii too and thought that it would be no big deal. We call Target and other area stores daily and still can't get our hands on one. They are no where to be found, however you can easily go and pick up a Ps3 they are on the shelves everywhere...

They're out there....
by mgpdmp January 19, 2007 12:07 PM PST
I was at a Target in California and actually found one in the store for sale. After requesting to purchase it I was told that it was a mistake and that they were not supposed to be put out until 1/21/07. This was back on 1/8/07. I have a feeling a lot of the big retailers are going to have an ad run this weekend for them.

Wii available Sunday 21st at ALL BEST BUYs
by nvjusme January 19, 2007 10:25 PM PST
Wii will be available at all Best Buy's on Sunday at opening. Get there early because there will be a line. I am one of the managers at Best Buy. Most stores will have more than the ad minimum. Good luck.

The simple answer
by drakko54 January 25, 2007 3:04 PM PST
I read a couple of days ago, in a games blog, that Sony is airlifting new shipments in order to fulfill demand, losing a lot of money in the precess. Nintendo, that is making profit from Wii since day 1, is sending new shipments trough sea cargo, so it takes more time to restock stores.
