Yes, Virginia, there is an iPhone from Apple

by Caroline McCarthy

It's so pretty!

Pinch yourself, Apple freaks. It's not a dream. The touch screen, wide-screen, media-playing iPod smart phone from Apple is here, and yes, it's called the iPhone. Read our play-by-play here.

  • 11.6mm thick: apparently thinner than all those other anorexic smart phones

  • iPod connector, mic input, and speaker jack

  • "Smart" screen knows which way to orient images depending on how you hold it; wide-screen playback for videos
  • Highest-resolution Apple screen of all time
  • Mac OS X operating system
  • Touch screen interface, no stylus
  • Full-on applications--more PC-like than mobile device-like
  • "Visual voice mail"

  • Widgets!

One for apple devotee's only.
by Happywarmgun January 9, 2007 10:47 AM PST
I'm dissapointed. I don't want a Ipod form factor that doubles as a phone, I want a phone form factor that doubles as an ipod. The reality is that the phone is the ESSENTIAL gadget in my life (business), the ipod is the luxury gadget. Not having 3g is a killer for those of us on the move. No-one has yet cracked the ipod/phone convergence despite some impressive smart phone releases at the back end of 2006. At first glance I don't think apple are going to buck that trend. I'll remain a two gadget man!

How many gigs?
by madiny January 9, 2007 10:48 AM PST
An Iphone with only 1 or 2 gigs is pointless. SHe is pretty though.

Try 4 or 8
by ~Canuck~ January 9, 2007 12:31 PM PST
4 Gigs would be 499, and 8 for 599.

Kinda high on the price-side, though.
I'm very excited about this phone.
by P2H January 9, 2007 10:50 AM PST
I have a first generation iPod and was looking to upgrade last September when I heard rumors about a new touch screen iPod. I resisted my temptation to buy and now we have something even more extraordinary coming! I'm glad i'm a Cingular customer, too!

Looks Cool!!!
by Bustertb January 9, 2007 10:54 AM PST
Too bad it's not available on my plan. Wonder what the battery life is like. Also am interested in how it will work in a cover. Looks like it could get pretty scratched up if not in a protector like the ipods. And will be interested in how the phone portion works for clarity of calls, etc.

wow, cool.. but..
by pedmart January 9, 2007 11:03 AM PST
the screen seems that will be get a lot of finger prints, and it looks delicate, i can take the ipod running, in the gym, at work, answer my phone when drinking or asleep, it seems it doesn't go with my lifestyle this is for someone who is very delicate to handle .. sorry, back to chocolate and regular ipod...

That was my impression too!
by caroline.mccarthy January 9, 2007 11:07 AM PST
This gadget is awesome, but my impression while blogging the news was that it's way too nice and way too expensive for someone who drinks coffee while talking on the phone and running to meetings. Maybe one of the numerous iPod accessory companies will make a splashguard?
I would take 30 to 60 gigs over a phone
by DaveV January 9, 2007 11:15 AM PST
I would rather spend that phone space on a harddrive.

Especial since The gig is up on GSM and it has way of advancing its speeds and capibilities. CDMA has a lot more options and is a lot faster. I think it is a Great idea and looks beautiful, but a prime example of this being a pain in the ass, is your on a flight and you it as your ipod to listen to music and watch a video, and then you get off the plane to call your ride and the battery is dead, with your friends contact info stuck inside it.

Use it wisely then.
by ackmondual January 9, 2007 10:59 PM PST
Despite having benefits, such is a con of having converged devices. You may wanna consider getting a seperate MP3 player and phone then. If you're MP3 player goes out, then yur phone is still intact.

Else, some cell phones use a type of flash memory that's nonvolatile. Your contacts will still be there if u lose power and can be accessed after u recharge it. If not either 1) use it conservatively. I know this would suck on long flights, but it wouldn't be just the iPhone. PSP, DS, PDA, laptop, and PVP users have devices that tend to be on the lower end of battery life and they need to bite the bullet as well... OR 2) get a portable charger with it's own power source made for the iPhone.
hd is a fine choice, but.....
by ackmondual January 9, 2007 11:01 PM PST
a 30 to 60GB doesn't let u make calls on the road. U can't access hd's data without a desktop/laptop either which is also useless on the road
NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED

No 3G = Not For Me
by MichaelAllen January 9, 2007 11:30 AM PST
The phone is pretty much perfect apart from the lack of 3G!!! Yes, you can tap into a network using WiFi; however, that as just a huge pain for someone who moves around a lot.

What's with the Sony pricing?
by PhillyBoy919 January 9, 2007 11:31 AM PST
$499 and $599 for a phone (that doesn't even support 3G wireless broadband), even one as cool as this, is absolutely ridiculous! I mean, are they serious? Do they really think their intended audience has at their disposal, let alone is willing to spend, that kind of money on a cell phone?

I definitely want one of these eventually but until the price comes down to reality and they include 3G wireless I'll be sticking with my Q.

Concrete prices
by monkeyhouse January 9, 2007 3:31 PM PST
The problem with Apple products is that they never drop, certainly not significantly, in price. They just come up with a new version of the product so the price stays high. They never even have sales of old stock.
This IS a higher end device.
by ackmondual January 9, 2007 10:45 PM PST
Wifi, BT, EDGE, hi-res screen, colro screen, touch screen, cell phone, OSX (not to mention the processor to run it), 2MP digicam. I'm sure Apple is expecting to sell this more like fully loaded mid range automobiles rather than an entry level ipod, cellphone, or basic utilitarian car. It won't be the vast majority of ppl who buy this, but those who aren't super rich, but aren't so frugal either.

flash type memory IS expensive. $300 gets you a 8GB ipod Nano. For x2 the money, you're getting a the improved attributes for the screen mentioned above, LOTS of WL options, an actual PC (... or a Mac to be technical). If this performs as well in reality as it does on paper, it could be a steal.
Price - Cell phone contracts

Can't See an Exclusive Phone Surviving
by ejmarin January 9, 2007 11:42 AM PST
Cingular may be the biggest carrier in the US, but its 58 million customers remain just a slice of the total available cell market. The iPod succeeded in that anyone could go out and get one. But this iPhone will necessarily have a much narrower piece of the pie so long as cell users are bound by two-year cell contracts.

I certainly wouldn't terminate an existing cell plan just to have this phone, and I've been waiting eagerly for the widescreen iPod. When Digg reported that the iPhone would be available in both GSM and CDMA, it made sense. Seeing now that it's a Cingular/GSM exclusive, all of a sudden it doesn't.

Bottom line is that I'm far less enthused about this than I thought I'd be, despite all the upside of having OS X on a portable device. Even though this isn't an Apple MVNO, it still has the contrived feel of a past failure like ESPN Mobile, which proved that expecting cell buyers to switch carriers just for your product can be messy proposition.

ps3 or iphone ?
by alpharay January 9, 2007 11:44 AM PST
It would be nicer to have 3G; but since it has Wifi, it will work well for me.
The price, however is a problem. Should I use that much money for a PS3 or an iphone ?
People complained about ipod the same reason before; we will see how the market react later.
Anyway, you have to admit, it is a very cool toy. Very very cool.

Does anybody READ!!!???
by cleone82 January 9, 2007 11:45 AM PST
Do you idiots read anything? No 3G...exactly!!! it's 4G now. This phone has just taken mobile communications to the next level. Stop being so damn close minded, and read a little deeper into what's going on here. Apple just dropped a bomb and you're all too stupid to even realize it.

Are you serious 4G???????????!!!!!!!!!!
by jaywil07 January 9, 2007 5:00 PM PST
it supports edge an old stlye network damn your slow just like edge. seriously come on new phone great tech yes network speed slow slow slow please go to www.apple.com and read not 3g, EDGE than go to cingular.com and read the difference between edge and 3g its the difference between dialup and broadband nimwit.
Looks Pretty but......
by JohnnyL January 9, 2007 11:47 AM PST
1)Not the thinnest. Samsung M610 is 10.1mm.
2)Doesn't fold in middle so will be sticking out of your shirt pocket. Would hate to see what putting this in your jeans pocket will do to it. Display durability is a real question as this is a touch screen
3)being a touch screen ...fingerprints
4)Battery life?
5)Price
6)Would really like to see a thin folding phone with a touch screen interface like this. I don't want an MP3 player
And this just off the top of my head.

by BJR2 January 9, 2007 12:02 PM PST
buy a q and be happy. the rest of us will get our iPhone's and we'll all be happy. lol well we will but you'll still be on a Q so probably not
response...
by ackmondual January 9, 2007 10:39 PM PST
1) in all fairness, they ARE cramming alot of features and functionality in there. Just how tight on space ARE YOU? This phone may not be the absoulte thinnest, but it appears compact enough. Unless you're some lady only wearing skirts/dresses w/o pockets, and carrying those cute but ridiculously petite handbags, you should have more than enough space to accomodate this phone.

2) PDA owners, and others with concerns of breaking their elec devices that are known to be more fragile than typcial cell phones have this issue too. Buy a hard case. It'll certainly add to the price, bulk, and weight, but on its own and for ppl who aren't in break prone situations like field work, it should last you. If not, then it's lawsuit time!

3) use your fingernails. Despite not coming with a stylus i'm sure they'll be 3rd party ones, or just use a "homemade" stylus like a pen with the point/tip retracted

4) 5 hours talk and 16 audio. I know that's not great batt life, esp. when BT, EDGE, and/or wifi use is kicked in, but I'm guessing running OSX takes a whollap on batt power.

5) Apple ain't the only one to offer great products in the "NOT priced to move" category. Products like the Tiger Gizmondo, Tapwave Zodiac, various Sony Clie, Sega Dreamcast, BetaMax, NeoGoe, and Sega GameGear may have been expensive for the competition they were in, but they were deemed great value for your $$. For sure Apple's brand name reputation will go far for the iPhone, and cell phone are hugely popular. I know high end cell phones (in functionality, not the $100 that cost 10x as much b/c it's laced with 24K gold and diamonds) can go up to $800. If ppl really do go for those as much as luxury cars are sought after, APple will be OK. Else, that sure ain't no impulse buy. It's gonna be a hard sell... even after price cuts.

6) flip phone would mean more prone to breakage with hinges, and not as big a screen since the screen area is folded in half. Splitting the scren in half doesn't bode too well with touchscreen.

As for the MP3 player, it's Apple, the creators of the MP3. They HAVE TO put an MP3 player in there.
VERY Nice, BUT....
by planblove January 9, 2007 11:49 AM PST
I LOVE the screen, love the functionalities it already has. BUT... $600??? Thats a PS3 in a shirt pocket. I think they should have put in a bit more memory(say at least 20gb). For me, even 8gb can be filled quickly(especially when their movies take up a GB apiece). And no 3G support? I understand all the technology crammed in that extremely thin shell wasn't cheap, but no 3G support for something that screams for it is truly crazy. Good start Apple, but it could've been so much better. I'll come back in a few years when its dropped a few hundred bucks and 3G is hopefully supported by then.

Consider the alternatives.
by Transience January 9, 2007 10:02 PM PST
Consider the retail price on other competing cellphones. The Samsung Blackjack retails around $449, the Cingular 8525 retails at $549, and the new Palm Treo 750 is at $649. Heck, if you want to complain about memory, look at those puppies. I would say that, considering the leapfrog in technology, $599 is a great deal. Assuming, of course, that IS retail cost.

Granted, the exclusion of 3G is an interesting choice. I suspect it might have to do with battery life.
but it's not just about the memory
by ackmondual January 9, 2007 10:26 PM PST
Wifi, BT, EDGE, hi-res screen, colro screen, touch screen, cell phone, OSX (not to mention the fast processor that's required to run it), 2MP digicam.

But yeah, the other poster did have some points. While the competition of "super duper cellphones" is good, it ain't spectacular. It's also an applesTOoranges comparison. THis looks like an extensions of OSX, itunes, browser, etc. Treos are business units, play multimedia, great selection of games (no match for mainstream console/handheld games of course). Blackberries are corporate devices, syncs up/connects with corporate networks, email mania devices, etc. Having the iPHone on the market at least gives us consumers more choices.

8GB Flash memory doesn't seem so bad IF the thing had expandable memory like SD, CF (probably too big to fit, but just an example), USB ports, etc., but no mention of not having it for sure, nor a scolding by Crave editors by its lack of. Having removable mem may be more expesive, but so long as u have the $$, your capacity is practically unlimited

HOwever, Apple ain't the only one to offer great products in the "NOT priced to move" category. Tiger Gizmondo, Tapwave Zodiac, various Sony Clie, Sega Dreamcast, BetaMax, etc. For sure Apple's brand name reputation will go far for the iPhone, and cell phone are hugely popular. NOBODY !!!

Now, don't feel stupid. Just relax and enjoy the rest of MacWorld.

Are you kidding me?
by PhillyBoy919 January 9, 2007 11:57 AM PST
4G? You obviously don't even know what that means. It supports Cingular's EDGE. That's not 3G, not 4G, just plain old-school. As in the same exact wireless connection you get with any FREE phone when you sign up for a plan.

I'm not saying many of the other feautres aren't advanced, but not much more so than the current 3G Smart phones (Q, BlackJack, E92, etc.) other than it works with iTunes, which is definitely cool.

To many people, myself included, a 3G connection is required for business applications such as tethering it to a laptop.

Please do a little research before you incorrectly throw around a tech term.

by Guru_18 January 9, 2007 12:06 PM PST
itll still be hands down PRODUCT OF THE YEAR. But without 3G its still cellphone useless. all that multimedia functions and they couldnt add that. I have a PPC6700 and mine does all that without this "cool" touchscreen or webbrowsing extra functions. i would get it but congular sux. plus its the price of a laptop. GEEZ cingular must have paid a boat load for that deal.
