Found: A good use for the Nokia Tablet

by Bonnie Cha

OK, I know I may be in the minority here (check out these user opinions), but I'm not a fan of the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet. Yes, it's portable; yes, it lets you surf the Web. I also realize it's not meant to be a PDA or a laptop replacement, but I just keep asking myself, "Why? Why would I want this thing?"

But wait, before you pour on the hate mail, let me just say, I may be changing my tune--just maybe.

Navicore has released a solution, simply called the Nokia Navigation Kit, that allows you to turn the Nokia 770 into a portable navigation device. Now, this is something I can get onboard with; the 770's bright touch screen would be perfect for viewing maps, and it's actually something I'd use in my daily life.

The kit includes the Navicore Personal 2007 software, a Bluetooth GPS receiver, and a vehicle mount. It's available for around $248, but it looks like we folks in the States will have to plunk down some extra change since the kit ships only with maps of continental Europe and the U.K. Oh, and it can play copilot to other other Symbian S60, S80, UIQ3 devices, so you're not just limited to the Nokia 770. The Navicore solution should be available in November, hopefully just in time for it to guide your way to Grandma's for Thanksgiving.

After 5 years, Firefox faces new challenges

Mozilla helped reshape the Web since releasing Firefox 1.0 five years ago. Now it's got a reawakened Microsoft and Google Chrome to reckon with.

There's a map for that: GPS or smartphone?

Almost every handset comes with mapping software these days, but standalone GPS devices are becoming more affordable than ever.
