Alan Becker has a bit of an obsession with both Minecraft and famed Japanese animator and director Hayao Miyazaki's 2001 film "Spirited Away." So he decided to do what any reasonable person would do: spend several years building the locations from the movie in Minecraft. The results are gorgeous.
Becker has the kind of attention to detail that really makes the sets and landscape pop. Lights in the ghost town glow at night, flowers bloom in all the right places, and the world is constantly under revision to more accurately represent the movie.
Becker is working from 400 screenshots of the film, along with repeated watchings and any concept art he can get his hands on. He probably dreams in Minecraft.
The custom world is available to download from Planet Minecraft. If you're not into playing Minecraft, but still want to check out Becker's work, you can take a guided multi-part video tour of the environment on his YouTube channel. He still isn't done with the project, currently estimating it at about 85 percent complete.
"Spirited Away" in Minecraft is one of many impressive projects built by fans of the game and stands tall among the likes of Minecraft King's Landing and Minecraft Great Britain. There's just something extra magnificent about Becker's magical build.
