Relive the Stratos jump in breathtaking Lego form
A Felix Baumgartner Lego mini-fig takes a death-defying leap from a Lego Stratos capsule... and survives.
Jump, tiny Felix!
(Credit: Video screenshot by Amanda Kooser/CNET)I huddled around my iPad connected to the City of Albuquerque's public Wi-Fi, waiting as Felix Baumgartner started his pre-jump checklist from 24 miles above the earth. The video stuttered, then stopped.
I missed most of the record-setting jump, but I don't feel so bad about it since I found the Lego reenactment. All of the excitement is pretty accurately captured in little plastic detail.
Workers mill about on the ground. The capsule takes flight with a (non-Lego) balloon. Little Felix takes the dive of his life. There are plenty of impressive aerial shots. Best of all, the whole thing takes less than 2 minutes, rather than well over 2 hours for the real jump.
The video's creator used a remote-controlled micro servo to get mini-Felix to jump. Unlike real Felix, the Lego version lands on its face, but I'm not going to quibble about one little thing in an overall outstanding Lego re-creation.
