ioSafe Solo G3 disaster-proof external hard drive
Beside death and taxes -- and April 17 is approaching, in case you don't pay attention -- the loss of data might be the third thing that's certain in life; it's just a matter of time. But there's hope.
Since you can file an extension to do the tax return, which you should avoid, there's also a way for you to further prevent data loss, which you definitely should do. And the Solo G3 from IoSafe is one of the best, if not the best solution, all things considered.
In a nutshell it's an external hard drive on which you can back up important data. But unlike most other external storage solutions you've seen, the Solo G3 is huge and very heavy. This is because of its many layers of protective materials, enough to keep the internal drive on the inside safe from extreme heat or prolonged water submersion, or probably both at the same time if that's somehow possible.
As an external drive, the Solo G3 supports USB 3.0 and in my testing, it was the fastest among all USB 3.0-based drives I've tested. It also works with USB 2.0, however, but at a much slower speed. The drive is reformatted using NTFS to work with Windows computers the moment it's plugged it. It, however, can also be reformatted to work with Macs.
Now, the G3 is definitely not for everyone, in fact most of us will find it hard even to move around, but for those who need something that guarantees that their data will survive disaster, at $300 for 1TB (or $350 and $400 for 2TB and 3TB, respectively) it's totally worth the investment, especially when considering the included data recovery service.
