Finally, you now can have access to a Thunderbolt storage device without having to sell an arm and a leg, but maybe just a little finger.
Seagate's latest adapter for its superflexible external hard drive, the GoFlex Desk, now supports the Thunderbolt standard and costs just $190.
While $190 is not a small amount, the GoFlex Desk Thunderbolt adapter, when coupled with a GoFlex Desk drive (which costs another $250 for the top 4TB capacity), still comes out at least $100 cheaper than any other Thunderbolt storage device, including those with much less storage space.
To add icing to this good deal, the Thunderbolt adapter also works with GoFlex portable drives and any other standard SATA internal drives, both 2.5 inch and 3.5 inch, of any capacities. This means you can really be in control of your storage space.
In my testing, the adapter offered excellent performance. Having two Thunderbolt ports, it can be used with multiple Thunderbolt devices in a daisy-chain setup, or you can choose to use multiple adapters to add more storage via your Mac's Thunderbolt port.
The adapter, unfortunately, doesn't come with a Thunderbolt cable, which is required for it to work. However, this is a common thing for all Thunderbolt storage devices on the market and more of a issue with Apple than with the storage vendors.
