As head of News Corp., Rupert Murdoch is one of the most powerful media personalities on the planet, and he has finally joined what some call the "new journalism": Twitter.

The 80-year-old media tycoon who "never learned to e-mail" joined the social media service on New Year's Eve and has since posted 17 tweets, with the most recent congratulating New York mayor (and competitor) Michael Bloomberg.

Joining Twitter could be seen as a New Year's resolution by Murdoch, who also tweeted that his resolutions were to "try to maintain humility and always curiosity. And of course diet!"

Unsurprisingly, most missives seem to be News Corp.-related with a tweet each for Fox pictures "The Descendants" and the-plot-is-in-the-title "We Bought a Zoo."

As a fellow Australian, though, I am personally disappointed by the lack of references to gallahs and/or antiquated oaths ("crikey," "strewth!").
