PC maker Toshiba recently knocked our socks off with the Editor's Choice winning Portege R835 laptop, which offered consumers a solid set of specs in a well-made 13-inch chassis for as little as $749. The company's business arm obviously didn't want to be left out, and this morning brings us the corporate version of the system, called the Portege R830, as well as a handful of other biz-friendly laptops.
Joining the Portege R830 are a pair of laptops from the Tecra line, the 14-inch Tecra R840 and the 15-inch Tecra R850. All three models have USB 3.0, eSATA connections, Toshiba's USB Sleep & Charge technology, and common docking connectors.
While the Portege R830 looks nearly identical to the consumer R835 we saw recently (except that the consumer version has a blue lid instead of black and lacks the underside docking connector), both new Tecras are significantly thinner than last year's versions (which were pretty hefty, by any standard).
One area where these new business versions can't touch their consumer counterparts is in price. While the Portege R835 is available for as little as $749, the corporate R830 model starts at $1,049 (although it has many more options, including solid state hard drives and Intel Core i7 processors).
The Tecra R840 starts at $899 and the R850 starts at $879. All three are available to order from Toshiba and online retailers starting today.
