Tetris has a very special place in my heart. As a child, my parents wouldn't buy my brothers and sister and I a Nintendo. They wanted us do "play outside" and "enjoy our youth" and "build character." We, of course, wanted to play Punch-Out!!!, Duck Hunt, and Metroid.
Then my cousin introduced my grandmother to Tetris. She was hooked. When we asked our grandparents for an NES they basically told my mom and dad that if they didn't get us one they were bad parents. Thanks Grandma, and thanks Tetris.
And now I can show my thanks by wearing, say, a Tetris hoodie. Or Tetris sunglasses. Or by using a Tetris-themed bowling ball. Or something. Because Blue Planet Software, the company behind the Tetris brand, announced Tuesday that after 25 years it's finally licensing Tetris to companies that want to sell Tetris merchandise.
It's part of the game's 25th anniversary celebration, which has been going on for about a year now. And it's a good move; everyone loves Tetris and it's one of the most recognizable games in the world. I'm going to get my grandmother a Tetris blanket. She's still around and I know she's going to love it.
