Two weeks after the release of the My Passport AV, an external hard drive designed specifically for use with digital content players and recorders, Western Digital announced the internal version of the same hard drive, the 2.5-inch SATA WD AV-25.
The company claims the new AV-25 hard drive differs from other internal hard drive by providing greater reliability, with a mean time between failures of 1 million hours. It's engineered specifically for demanding, always-on multimedia-streaming applications, and runs cool and quiet.
Apart from that, WD says the AV-25 hard drive meets the requirements of the AV/DVR and surveillance markets by offering universal compatibility, low power consumption, and the capability to simultaneously record multiple audio and/or high-definition video streams.
Other features of the new AV-25 hard drive include:
Advanced format technology that delivers improved video quality and AV performance through enhanced error correction capability.
- SilkStream technology: The drive is optimized for smooth, continuous digital video playback of up to five simultaneous HD streams. SilkStream is compatible with the ATA streaming command set, so AV customers can use standard streaming management and error recovery options.
Ultra-cool operation: The hard drive remains cool even during heavy operation, which contributes to its long life span.
- Quiet: The hard drive's acoustic level during operation is below the threshold of human hearing.
- Low power consumption: The drive draws less than 2 watts during operation and a mere 4.75 watts during spin-up.
- Preemptive wear leveling: The drive arm frequently sweeps across the disk to reduce uneven wear on the drive surface that is common to audio-video-streaming applications.
Though optimized for digital content, the new drive seems fit for other applications, too, including laptops. It supports the SATA 3Gbps standard, spins at 5400rpm, and comes with a large 32MB of cache.
The WD AV-25 hard drive is available in 160GB, 250GB, 320GB, and 500GB capacities and comes with a three-year warranty. It's slated to cost between $50 and $80, depending on capacity.
